너울의 시각화와 조형적 변용

Abstract

Looking back on the history of human artistic expression, most of the subjects are related to the nature surrounding us. Nature has awakened humans’ desire to express and offered numerous motives and inspirations for their art will. Sea, among various elements of nature, holds a symbolic meaning of infinity, depth, and fluidity. And its unique and rich colors allow free change from moment to moment depending on an observer’s subjective interpretation. For such charm, the sea has been deemed as an aesthetic object and a material for creation not only in art but also in literature, and music. I have been drawn to the sea, a form made by free-curved lines, that evokes the feeling of freedom, rhythm, and splendor. While looking at dangerously fluctuating swell on the enormous sea together with buoyant bubbles over the swell, I felt as if a living creature was dynamically moving and transforming. In that movement, I could have the experience of finding another new abstract image. The purpose of this study is to reconstruct and image the moving swell through intuition, and at the same time to seek a theme for upcoming works to be produced. In addition, through the analysis of the formative characteristics of the unique free-curved lines in the works of a contemporary artist Yayoi Kusama, the study aims to find a possibility of developing the free-curved lines into an individual and differentiated expression technique for creating artwork in the future. ;인간의 예술적 표현의 역사를 살펴보면 상당 부분 그 대상이 우리를 둘러싸고 있는 자연과 연관되어 있다. 자연은 인간으로 하여금 표현의 욕구를 불러일으켜 인간의 조형 의지에 수많은 동기와 영감을 제공하여 왔다. 자연을 구성하고 있는 여러 요소 중에서도 바다는 무한하고 깊으며 유동적이라는 상징적 의미와 함께, 바다만의 고유의 색은 관찰자의 주관적인 해석에 따라 색의 수와 배열 그리고 형태를 다양하게 표현할 수 있다. 이러한 매력 때문에 바다는 예로부터 심미적 대상으로 여겨졌으며, 미술뿐만 아니라 문학과 음악에서도 창작의 소재가 되어 왔다. 본 연구자는 자유로움과 리듬감, 화려함을 느끼게 하는 자유곡선이 만들어내는 형태인 바다에 많은 관심을 가져왔다. 커다란 바다 위에 위험스럽게 출렁이는 너울과 그 위를 부유하는 흰색의 포말에서 마치 살아서 역동적으로 움직이고 변화하는 생명체를 보는듯한 느낌을 받았고, 또 그 움직임 속에서 새로운 추상적 이미지를 발견하는 체험을 하게 되었다. 본 연구의 목적은 움직이는 너울을 직관을 통해 화면에 재구성하여 이미지화하는 것과 동시에 이후 제작할 작품의 주제를 모색함에 있다. 또한 현대미술 작가 쿠사마 야요이의 작품에서 보여 지는 독특한 자유곡선의 조형적 특징 분석을 통해 이후의 작품 창작 과정에서 자유곡선을 연구자만의 독창적이고 차별화된 표현기법으로 발전시킬 수 있는 가능성을 찾고자 하였다.
