릴리 불랑제(Lili Boulanger)의 합창곡 <Les sirènes>와 <Psaume XXIV> 연구

Abstract

The period before the late 19th century was an era in which the activities of female musicians, especially professional female composers, were very limited due to the rigid stereotypes for womanhood. Nevertheless, there were a considerable number of female composers. Some of them especially from the turn of the 20th century are currently being studied in recognition of their undertaking and accomplishments. Lili Boulanger (1893-1918), Nadia Boulanger (1887-1979), and Cécille Chaminade (1857-1944) are the most prominent female composers from France, and this study especially focuses on Lili Boulanger's choral works, Les sirènes and Psaume XXIV. Les sirènes (Siren), a choral work for Mezzo-soprano solo, SMA&MAT choir, and piano was written in 1911 with a poem from Charles Grandmougin (1850-1930)’s poetry collection À pleines voiles (Full Sail, 1888). Psaume XXIV, a choral work for Tenor solo, SATB choir and brass (horn, trumpet, trombone, and tuba), timpani, harp and organ was composed in 1916 based on Psalm 24 of the Old Testament as lyrics. In these works, Boulanger utilizes the features of word-painting technique and Impressionist music style of her time to develop her distinctive musical style. This study aspires to help Lili Boulanger’s works to be more widely exhibited and accepted so that both the conductors and performers would better understand the depth of her works and play them accordingly. Furthermore, the study aims to enflame more research on other brilliant female composers who are still hidden in the dark. Ultimately, more of their music should be studied, appreciated, and performed. ;19세기 말 이전에는 사회적으로 고정된 여성관으로 인해 여성음악가, 특히 전문 여성작곡가로서의 활동이 매우 제한적인 시대였다. 그럼에도 불구하고 적지 않은 수의 여성작곡가들이 존재하였고, 20세기 전후로 활동했던 몇몇 여성작곡가들은 현재 그녀들의 존재와 음악의 가치를 인정받으며 연구되고 있다. 프랑스의 대표적인 여성작곡가로는 릴리 불랑제(Lili Boulanger, 1893-1918), 나디아 불랑제(Nadia Boulanger, 1887-1979) 그리고 세실 샤미나드(Cécile Chaminade, 1857-1944)가 있다. 본 논문은 그중 릴리 불랑제의 합창곡 <Les sirènes> (인어들)과 <Psaume XXIV> (시편24편)에 대한 연구이다. <Les sirènes>는 메조소프라노 솔로, 두 개의 합창그룹(SMA & MAT)과 피아노를 위한 합창곡으로, 샤를르 그랑무장(Charles Grandmougin, 1850-1930)의 시집 ⟪À pleines voiles, 1888⟫(완전한 돛) 중에서 발췌한 시를 가사로 하여 1911년에 완성되었다. <Psaume XXIV>은 테너 솔로, 혼성합창(SATB), 금관악기(호른, 트럼펫, 트럼본, 튜바), 팀파니, 하프와 오르간을 위한 합창곡으로, 구약성경의 시편24편을 가사로 하여 1916년에 작곡되었다. 불랑제는 이들 작품에서 가사그리기(word-painting) 기법과 그 당시 프랑스 음악을 대표했던 인상주의 음악의 특징을 살려 자신만의 특색으로 표현하였다. 필자는 여성작곡가 릴리 불랑제의 작품들을 더 알리고, 지휘자와 연주자들로 하여금 그녀의 작품을 더 깊이 이해하고 연주하는데 도움이 되기 위해 본 논문을 작성했다. 더 나아가 아직 빛을 보지 못한 훌륭한 여성작곡가들에 대한 연구가 활성화되어 많은 작품들이 연주되길 바란다.
