영화 <스타워즈Ⅲ-시스의 복수>의 음악 분석을 통한 존 윌리엄스(John Williams)의 음악적 특징 연구

Abstract

본 논문은 존 윌리엄스(John Williams, 1932~)가 작곡을 담당한 영화 <스타워즈Ⅲ-시스의 복수(Revenge of the Sith), 2005>의 음악적 특징에 관한 연구이다. 존 윌리엄스는 약 60년간 할리우드 주요 흥행작들을 포함한 110편이 넘는 작품 경력을 이어오며 한 시대를 아울러 독보적인 음악적 능력을 보여주고 있는 영화음악계의 거장이다. <스타워즈 시리즈>는 조지 루카스(George Lucas, 1944~)가 감독을 맡은 SF 장르의 장편 시리즈 영화이자, 존 윌리엄스가 전 작품의 음악을 작곡한 영화로써 우주를 배경으로 평화를 수호하며 악에 세력에 맞서는 제다이들의 숙명을 그린 대서사시이다. <스타워즈 시리즈>는 전반적으로 여러 세력과 종족 간의 전쟁이 주된 줄거리이지만, <스타워즈Ⅲ>는 전쟁이 아닌 사랑을 주제로 극이 전개되고 줄거리들이 점철되는 것이 특징적인 작품이다. 이러한 이유로 본 연구자는 <스타워즈Ⅲ>을 선정하여 분석의 대상으로 삼았으며 감독의 연출 의도와 등장인물의 특성, 극의 전개에 따른 상황들과 인물의 심리 변화 그리고 작품이 전달하려는 주제를 존 윌리엄스가 음악적으로 어떻게 표현하였는지 알아보고자 한다. 본 논문에서는 존 윌리엄스의 음악적 특징을 분석하기에 앞서 작곡가의 작품세계와 경향들을 통하여 그의 음악사적 위치를 살펴보았으며, 영화 <스타워즈 시리즈>의 변천사와 전 작품의 줄거리 흐름을 파악함으로써 <스타워즈Ⅲ>의 작품 분석을 위한 배경 지식을 알아보았다. 존 윌리엄스가 주요 인물들에 설정한 테마 모티브는 <스타워즈 시리즈>의 여러 작품에 걸쳐져 나타나기 때문에 선행연구 단계에서 전체 작품의 줄거리를 이해함으로써 <스타워즈Ⅲ>편에서 주인공들이 처한 상황과 심리를 파악하고자 하였다. 영화의 각 장면과 음악의 상관관계를 토대로 서사 전개에 따라 발단, 전개, 위기, 갈등, 절정, 결말로 나누어 음악적 특징을 분석하였으며 각 장면에 사용된 음악은 총 61곡으로 본 논문에서는 전 곡을 연구하였다. 연구의 결과, 존 윌리엄스는 오프닝 테마에 메인 타이틀을 사용하여 영화 전반의 줄거리와 우주 전쟁 분위기를 표현하였다. 또한 인물이나 특정한 상황에 테마 모티브를 설정하여 인물의 환경이나 감정의 변화에 따라 선율을 변주하며 영화의 줄거리와 테마 모티브를 유기적으로 연결함으로써 스토리텔링의 기능을 강화하였다. 장면의 함축적인 의미와 드러나지 않는 감정을 영화 전반에 음악이 흐르게 하는 기능을 사용하여 인물들의 심리와 상황을 보조하였으며 우주의 공간감이나 전쟁 장면을 히트 포인트와 악기의 특수주법을 사용하여 음향 효과적으로 묘사하는 특징을 나타냈다. 마지막으로 엔딩 크레딧 음악은 주제곡과 주요 테마 모티브들을 나열하였는데 그중 <스타워즈Ⅲ>의 다음 편에서 나타나는 테마 모티브를 사용함으로써 음악을 통하여 장편 시리즈 영화의 이야기를 이어주는 역할을 하였다. 본 연구를 통해 존 윌리엄스에 관한 연구뿐만 아니라 <스타워즈 시리즈>를 포함한 그의 다양한 작품들과 장편 시리즈 영화음악에 관한 연구에 많은 도움이 되길 바라는 바이다.;The purpose of this thesis is to study its musical characteristics of the film Star Wars III - Revenge of the Sith (2005), in which John Williams (1932~) composed the score. John Williams who has composed prolifically over 110 works of film music for 60 years, is acknowledged as great master of flim music, showing peerless talent that influenced one era. Star Wars, feature film series of SF movie directed by George Lucas (1944~), is an epic story about Jedi's fate and battle to protect the peace in space against dark force. The story flow of Star wars III revolve around Love not War and this is a remarkable feature of the movie. For this reason, in this thesis, "Star wars III" was selected as the subject of study and would like to analyse director's intention, character's traits. And This researcher would like to study how it show the situation turnover & psychological change of figure upon flow of plot and suppose to study how John Williams describe the theme of film musically. Research started looking John Williams' musical characteristics, this researcher looked at the composer's musical historical location through his world and trends, and looked at the history of the Star Wars series and the overall storyline flow to find out the background knowledge for the analysis of Star Wars III's work. In preliminary step of the study, The thesis first looked into overall flow of the plot, for background knowledge regarding the film. Since the motif which composer give to main character appears throughout all series, taking an overview of entire series of film was done to understand the character's personal psychology and their situation details in advance. The analysis was performed, breaking each part down into beginning, rising action, crisis, climax, and ending, According by the correlation between each scene and background music. A total of 61 pieces were provided in each scene of the movie and the entire works were analyzed for this study. As a result of this research, John Williams used the main title as an opening theme to express the plot and atmosphere of the space war, and strengthened the storytelling by organically linking the plot through variations in melody as the character's environment or emotions changed. It also assisted characters' psychology and situations by using the implicit meaning of the scene and the wall-to-wall function, which allows music to flow throughout the film, and acoustically depicting space or war scenes using hitpoints and musical instruments. In addition, listing the theme songs and key theme motifs of next series as well as Star Wars III in the ending credits music functioned as connection of the worldview of the feature series. This paper identified John Williams' musical characteristics through the study of Star Wars III, and hopes that this study will help further studies about him a lot, as well as his various works, including the Star Wars series, and the feature film music.
