낯선 장소에서 발견한 환상의 공간

Abstract

공간은 오랜 세월 인간 활동의 근간으로 여겨져 왔으며 긴 역사와 시대적 맥락 속에서 다양한 의미들로 변모해 왔다. 오늘날 기술문명이 고도로 발달되면서 그 개념은 더욱 확장되고 있다. 이는 예술가들에게도 예외가 아니어서, 많은 예술가들의 작업 속에서 우리는 그 외연 확장에 대한 가능성을 기대하게 된다. 본인의 작업은 이러한 공간에 대한 탐색을 바탕으로 한다. 일상 속 장소에서 갖게 된 낯선 느낌을 바탕으로, 상상을 가미하여 새로운 환상의 공간을 구현하는 과정으로 진행된다. 우선 평범하고 일상적인 공간에서 출발하여, 개인적 해석을 투사한 관념적 공간을 캔버스에 담아낸다. 이 과정에서 본인에게 낯섦을 경험하게 한 그 장소는 작품에서 더해진 몽환적 분위기를 통해 관람자로 하여금 현실 너머의 상상적 공간을 경험하게 하는 계기가 된다. 이렇게 낯선 장소들을 새롭게 만든 공간은 현실 속에서 발견 가능한 환상의 공간, 이른바 헤테로토피아(Hétérotopie) 개념과 상통한다. 특히 도시 속 방치된 공간이나 버려진 듯한 건물과 같이 정체가 불명확한 공간은 본인에게 새로운 감각을 불어넣는 공간으로 작용할 뿐만 아니라, 반복되는 일상에서 안식을 찾는 공간으로 기능한다. 따라서 익숙하고 편안함이 아닌 낯섦이라는 시간적 경험을 통해 한시적 헤테로토피아로 존재한다. 그리고 이러한 공간은 주체의 주관적 인식에 따라 개인마다 다르게 지각된다는 사실에서 본인 혹은 관람자 개개인에게 여러 가지 각각 다른 공간으로 존재할 가능성을 나타낸다. 본 논문은 이처럼 현실 속 낯선 장소에서 눈에 보이지 않는 현실 너머의 공간으로의 이행과정을 두 가지 방법으로 설명했다. 첫 번째는‘상상’을 통해 전개시키는 방법으로, 이것은 의식과 무의식의 중간 상태인 몽상적 활동이 만들어내는 방법이다. 본인은 몽상적 상태를 상정한 후, 현실의 모습을 의식적으로 자유롭게 변화시킴으로써 비현실적인 환상의 공간을 회화에 구현하고자 했다. 두 번째는 낯선 장소에서 발생하는 생경하고 불안한 심리에 주목하여 이를 작품에 표현하는 방법이다. 낯섦은 익숙하거나 편안하지 않은 감정으로, 무슨 일이 발생하거나 무언가 사라질 것 같은 불길한 예감으로 이어진다. 이처럼 불안감과 긴장을 유발하는 요소는 본인 및 관람자의 상상적 내러티브를 이끌어내는 주요 요인 중 하나다. 따라서 본인은 이러한 낯선 장소에서 느낀 불안한 내면심리를 통해 실제 모습과는 다른 모습으로 나타나는 관념 속의 공간을 표현하고자 했다. 또한, 결과적으로 본인 작품에서 나타나는 환상의 공간이 구체적으로 어떤 조형적인 특징을 갖게 되는지 분석하였다. 작품에서 느껴지는 특유의 긴장감과 묘한 분위기를 조성하는 구성들을 살펴보았으며, 단순화된 기하학적 형태들을 통해 객관적으로 인식 가능한 정보가 생략되며 관찰자가 재인식한 공간을 나타내는 지점을 알아보았다. 마지막으로, 본인의 작품에서 주로 쓰인 보라색의 상징 및 의미를 통해 이러한 특정 색이 본인이 추구하는 공간을 표현하는데 중요한 역할을 하는 점을 살펴보았다. 시대의 흐름에 따라 공간은 더욱 다양한 가능성을 가지며 그에 따라 우리의 경험과 인식도 달라진다. 그러나 우리는 이미 쌓아온 경험과 축적된 시간들로 인해 공간들의 무한한 가능성을 인식하지 못한 채 그저 평범하고 일상적인 의미로서의 공간들을 인식해 왔다. 본인은 낯선 장소가 불러일으키는 특별한 감정과 상상에 주목하여 본인의 관념 속에서 만들어지는 환상적인 공간을 표현하고자 하였다. 이러한 공간은 광범위하고 추상적인 개념으로서의 공간이 아닌, 새롭고 주관적인 또 다른 공간으로서 그 의미와 가치를 갖는다.;Space has been regarded as the basis of human activity for a long time. It has been transformed into a variety of meanings in the long history and the context of the times. Today, as technological civilization is highly developed, the concept of space is expanding further. This is no exception to artists, so we look forward to space's possibility of extensions in the works of many artists. My work process is based on the exploration of these spaces. Based on the unfamiliar feeling I felt in everyday places, I create a new illusion of space by adding imagination. First of all, start by capturing an ordinary, everyday place, I put my interpretation of the ideological space on the canvas. In the process, the place that made me experience unfamiliarity becomes an opportunity for the viewer to experience an imaginary space beyond reality through a dreamlike atmosphere. These unfamiliar places are in line with the concept of illusory space, so-called "Heterotopia (Hétérotopie)”, that can be found in reality. In particular, unidentified spaces, such as abandoned buildings in the city, not only serve as spaces that instill a new sense into me but also provide rest in my repetitive daily life. Therefore, it exists as a temporary heterotopia through the time experience of unfamiliarity, not familiarity. In addition, these spaces indicate the possibility of being present as multiple different spaces for each person or spectator, given that they are perceived differently depending on the subjective perception of the subject. This paper illustrates the transition from such an unfamiliar place in reality to space beyond the invisible reality in two ways. The first is a way of developing through "imagination”, which is a way of creating an intermediate state dream activity between consciousness and unconsciousness. After postulating the dreamy state, I tried to create an unrealistic fantasy space in a painting by consciously and freely changing the appearance of reality. The second is the way to express the strangeness and anxiety that occurred in unfamiliar places in the work. Unfamiliarity is an uncomfortable feeling that leads to an ominous feeling that something is about to happen or disappear. Such factors that cause anxiety and tension are some of the main factors that elicit imaginative narratives of oneself and the audience. Therefore, through the uneasy inner psychology felt in these unfamiliar places, I tried to express the space in the concept of being different from what it originally was. In addition, I analyzed in detail what formative features the illusory space in my work has as a result. I explained the compositions that create the unique tension and the strange atmosphere felt in the work. Also, I looked at the points where objectively recognizable information was omitted through simplified geometric forms and represented the space re-recognized by observers. Finally, through the symbols and meanings of purple, which were mainly used in my work, I explained the important role of this particular color that functions in expressing the illusory space I pursue. With the flow of time, space has had more diverse possibilities, and our experience and perception vary accordingly. However, due to the experience and time we have already accumulated, we have not recognized the infinite possibilities of spaces, but have only recognized them as ordinary and everyday meanings. Thus, I wanted to create a new illusory space that I pursued by paying attention to the special feelings and imaginations that unfamiliar places evoke. These spaces have their meaning and value as another new and subjective space, not just as a space as a broad and abstract concept.
