강석희의 작곡기법 연구

Abstract

본 논문은 작곡가 강석희(1934-2020)의 현악 앙상블을 위한 <평창의 사계>(Four Seasons of Pyeong-Chang, 2006)에서 드러나는 강석희의 작곡기법과 음악세계에 대한 심층적 고찰이다. 한국 현대음악사의 선구적 인물로 다양한 장르의 작품들을 통하여 자신의 음악 세계를 구축해 온 강석희의 작품 <평창의 사계>는 대관령 국제음악제의 음악감독이었던 강효(1945-)의 제안으로 위촉, 작곡되었으며 사계절을 나타내는 네 개의 악장으로 이루어져 강원도 평창의 계절적 풍경을 눈에 보이듯 그려내는 곡이다. 악곡의 재료적 차원에서 <봄>과 <겨울>은 셋잇단음표로 구성된 모티브를 통해 겨울에 잉태된 생명력이 봄이 되어 강력하게 피어나듯 연결된다. <여름>과 <가을> 에서는 수직적인 음향과 음색이 특징적이며, 제시된 멜로디가 각각의 성부에서 시간차를 가지고 나오는 대위적인 구성이 주요하다. <평창의 사계>를 특징짓는 작곡방식은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 다양한 음색과 음향을 표현하기 위해 작곡가가 배음과 순정율을 사용하면서 미분음을 첨가하여 자신이 원하는 소리를 구현하였다. 둘째, 작곡가는 다양한 단편을 구성하고 단편 간의 조합 및 연결로 곡의 구조를 만드는 ‘프라그먼트 기법’을 사용함으로써 곡의 다양성과 통일성을 동시에 추구하였다. 셋째, 작곡가는 농악 리듬을 원천으로 한 모티브를 사용하여 긴장감과 에너지 넘치는 한국적 리듬 구조를 악곡에 구현함과 동시에 국악의 농현을 적용하는 차원에서 원래 요성 즉 비브라토에 해당하는 전통 농현의 의미를 확대해 음의 앞 또는 뒤에 오는 꾸밈음, 비브라토, 글리산도, 셈여림의 아티큘레이션을 함께 운용하며 음에 생명력을 불어넣고 음향을 풍성하게 하였다. 넷째, 한국에 전자음악을 처음 소개한 작곡가로서 많은 작품에서 컴퓨터 및 전자 음향을 사용하여 음색 표현의 한계를 크게 확대한 바 있는 강석희는 <평창의 사계>에서는 역으로 전통 악기를 사용하며 전자음악적인 소리를 내기 위해 미분음을 적극 활용하였다. 이와 같은 작곡 방식들을 통해 강석희는 한국적 음향의 특징들을 서양의 작곡기법으로 풀어내는 방식으로 한국의 사계절을 매우 독특한 음향적 색채로 구현하며 서양의 표제음악에 비견되는 현대적 어법의 표제음악을 제시하였다. <평창의 사계>는 작곡가로서의 화려한 전성기를 보내고 완숙기에 접어든 강석희가 작품 활동의 황혼기에 집대성한 음악세계의 응결체로서 그가 구축한 독창적 작곡 방식의 정수를 보여주는 작품이다.;This thesis is an in-depth examination of composer Sukhi Kang(1934-2020)'s compositional techniques and a view of music revealed in the string ensemble piece <Four Seasons of Pyeong-Chang>(2006). Sukhi Kang is a pioneering figure in the history of contemporary music, and he composed <Four Seasons of Pyeong-Chang> in 2006 upon the request of Hyo Kang (1945-), the music director of The Great Mountain International Music Festival and School(GMMF). This music consists of four movements representing the four seasons of Pyeong-Chang and vividly depicts the seasonal sceneries. In terms of the material of the music, the movements of <Spring> and <Winter> are connected as if the vitality conceived in winter blooms in spring through the motif composed of triplets. The movements of <Summer> and <Autumn> are characterized by vertical sound and tone, and the main point is the counterpoint composition in which the presented melody comes out with a time difference in each part. The compositional techniques that characterize the <Four Seasons of Pyeong-Chang> are summarized as follows; first, the composer created various tones and sounds using overtones and just intonation. At the same time, he added microtones to realize the sound he wanted. Second, the composer concurrently pursued the diversity and unity of the piece by composing various fragments. He also used the ‘Fragmental Technique’ to create the song structure by combining and connecting the fragments. Third, the composer implemented a Korean rhythmic structure with full tension and energy by using ‘Nong-ak’ rhythm based motif. Moreover, to apply the ‘Nonghyun’ of Korean traditional music, he used ornaments, vibrato, glissando, and dynamic articulation that come before or after a note to breathe life into the sound and enrich the sound. Fourth, the composer actively used microtones to produce electronic sounds using instruments. Kang was one of the first to introduce electronic music in Korea and he greatly contributed in expanding the limits of timbre expression using the computer and electronic sounds. Conversely, in <Four Seasons of Pyeong-Chang>, he attempted producing electronic sounds using the traditional instruments. Through these composing methods, Kang presented the program music with a modern usage comparable to Western program music. He embodied the four seasons of Korea with very unique acoustic colors by unraveling the characteristics of Korean sounds with Western compositional techniques. <Four Seasons of Pyeong-Chang> is a work that shows the essence of the original compositional method that Sukhi Kang, who had spent his splendid heyday as a composer and entered the maturity stage, gathered together in the twilight of his artistic career.
