Bilingual and Monolingual Preschoolers’ Social Competence

Abstract

The main purposes of the present study were as follows: 1) to explore the differences in preschoolers’ theory of mind and social competence depending on bilingualism, 2) to explore the direct effect of mothers’ parenting behavior on preschoolers’ social competence and the indirect effect of mothers’ parenting behavior on preschoolers’ social competence through preschoolers’ theory of mind. A total of 468 Taiwanese mother-child dyads participated in the study, which mothers completed an online survey consisting of questions about themselves and their children. Preschoolers’ bilingualism was reported by mothers through a survey question. Mothers’ parenting behavior was assessed by the Revised Parents as a Social Context Questionnaire (R-PSCQ; Skinner et al., 2005). Preschoolers’ theory of mind was assessed by the Children’s Social Understanding Scale (CSUS; Tahiroglu et al., 2014). Preschoolers’ social competence was assessed by the Preschool and Kindergarten Behavior Scales (PKBS; Merrell et al., 1994). The findings of the present study were as follows: First, significant differences were found between monolingual and bilingual preschoolers’ theory of mind and between their social competence. Specifically, bilingual preschoolers demonstrated significantly higher levels of theory of mind and social competence than monolingual preschoolers. Second, mothers’ parenting behavior had a significant direct effect on preschoolers’ social competence. Specifically, when mothers demonstrated more positive parenting behavior, the level of preschoolers’ social competence became higher. Third, mothers’ parenting behavior was found to have a significant direct effect on preschoolers’ theory of mind. That is, the level of preschoolers’ theory of mind was higher when mothers practiced more positive parenting behavior. Fourth, preschoolers’ theory of mind had a significant effect on social competence. Specifically, preschoolers demonstrated a higher level of social competence when they had a higher level of theory of mind. Lastly, the indirect effect mothers’ parenting behavior had on preschoolers’ social competence through theory of mind was significant. Mothers’ more positive parenting behavior resulted in a higher level of preschoolers’ theory of mind, which further resulted in a higher level of preschoolers’ social competence. The findings of the present study showed the importance of preschoolers’ theory of mind, and mothers’ parenting behavior in preschoolers’ social competence. Findings of the current study can be used when developing parent education program and programs that provide help for immigrant families. ;본 연구의 목적은 이중언어 사용에 따른 마음이론과 사회적 유능성의 차이를 살펴보고, 어머니의 양육행동이 유아의 사회적 유능성에 미치는 직접효과와 유아의 마음이론을 통한 간접적 효과를 탐색하는 것이다. 이를 위해 468쌍의 대만 어머니와 유아가 연구에 참여하였다. 어머니가 본인과 자녀에 관련된 질문들로 구성되어 있는 온라인 설문에 응답하였다. 유아의 이중언어사용은 설문조사 내 질문에 대한 어머니들의 응답을 통해 보고되었다. 어머니의 양육행동은 개정판 부모 양육행동 척도(R-PSCQ; Skinner et al., 2005)를 사용하여 측정되었으며, 유아의 마음이론은 아동의 사회적 이해 척도(CSUS; Tahiroglu et al., 2014)를 사용하여 측정하였다. 유아의 사회적 유능성을 측정하기 위하여 유아 행동 척도 (PKBS; Merrell et al., 1994)를 사용하였다. 본 연구의 주요 결과는 다음과 같다: 첫째, 이중언어 사용 여부에 따라 마음이론과 사회적 유능성에 차이가 나타났다. 즉, 이중언어를 사용하는 유아가 단일언어를 사용하는 유아보다 높은 수준의 마음이론과 사회적 유능성을 보였다. 둘째, 어머니의 양육행동은 유아의 사회적 유능성에 유의한 직접효과를 미쳐, 어머니가 긍정적인 양육행동을 더 보일수록 유아가 높은 수준의 사회적 유능성을 보였다. 셋째, 어머니의 양육행동은 유아의 마음이론에 유의한 영향을 미쳐, 어머니가 긍정적인 양육행동을 보일수록 유아가 높은 수준의 마음이론을 보였다. 넷째, 유아의 마음이론이 사회적 유능성에 미치는 영향은 유의하였다. 즉, 유아의 마음이론 수준이 높을수록 사회적 유능성이 높았다. 마지막으로, 어머니의 양육행동이 마음이론을 통해 유아의 사회적 유능성에 간접적인 영향을 미쳤다. 즉, 어머니가 긍정적인 양육행동을 보일수록 유아가 더 높은 수준의 마음이론을 보였고, 그 결과 높은 사회적 유능성을 보였다. 본 연구의 결과는 유아의 이중언어사용, 어머니의 양육행동과 마음이론이 유아의 사회적 유능성에 대해 가지는 중요성을 강조하고 있다. 본 연구의 결과는 부모교육 프로그램과 이민 가족에게 도움을 제공할 수 있는 프로그램들을 개발하는 것에 활용될 수 있다.
