The Relocation of Manufacturing from China to Vietnam

Abstract

The US – China trade war started off in 2018 by Donald Trump has dealt a hard blow on foreign investors in China, urging them to get out and find new destinations. There are also evidences that this trend has been happening for around a decade since labor costs in China started picking up. Thus, in this research project, I provided an overview of factors affecting firms’ decision to relocate and invest overseas in light of current global events and selected countries’ performances. More importantly, I looked into the notion that Vietnam should be the next major destination for MNCs. The primary research methodology of this study is a qualitative approach built on literature review and SWOT analysis where Vietnam’s performances in numbers and data are compared and contrasted with its direct competitors in the region. In addition, a quantitative analysis is included to affirm the causal relationship between examined factors and foreign investment inflows. The combined results of SWOT analysis and quantitative models provided the main contribution of this study, indicating that based on the current state and conditions, Vietnam’s chance to successfully become the new “world’s factory” is not as bright as it seems.;도널드 트럼프가 2018년 시작한 미중 무역전쟁은 중국내 외국인 투자자들에게 빠져나와 새로운 목적지를 찾도록 촉구하며 큰 타격을 주고 있다. 게다가 증거들에 따라 이러한 경향은 중국의 인건비가 증가하기로 약 10년 동안 진행하고 있다. 따라서, 본 프로젝트에서는 국제 및 국가 현황를 고려하여 해외투자 이전 및 결정에 영향을 미치는 요인를 요약한다. 더 중요한 것은 베트남이 MNC의 다음 주요 목적지가 될 거라고 하는 의견을 검토한다. 본 연구의 주요 연구 방법론은 베트남의 데이터를 지역의 직접적인 경쟁자들과 비교하고 대조하는 문헌 검토 및 SWOT 분석을 기반으로 구축된 질적 접근법이다. 또한 조사한 요인과 외국인 투자 간의 인과관계를 확인하기 위한 양적 분석이 포함된다. SWOT 분석과 정량적 모델을 결합한 결과가 이 연구의 주요 기여다, 현 상태와 상황을 바탕으로 베트남이 새로운 '세계의 공장'이 될 수 있는 기회는 기대에 비해 밝지 않은 것 같다.
