비일관적 매개효과 모형의 해석 방향 탐색

Abstract

매개모형은 심리학을 포함한 사회과학 분야에서 가장 널리 사용되는 연구 주제로 자리 잡았으나, 기존의 매개효과 분석 절차에 근거했을 때 적절한 해석이 어려운 결과가 발생하곤 하는데 그 중 하나가 비일관적 매개모형(inconsistent mediation)이다. 비일관적 매개모형이란 직접효과와 간접효과의 부호가 다르거나 혹은 그로 인해 총효과의 크기보다 직접효과의 크기가 더 큰 억제효과(suppression)가 발생한 모형을 일컫는다. 비일관적 매개모형을 정의하는 방식들 모두 그 특징이 연구자의 직관적인 매개모형 이해를 벗어나 의미 해석에 어려움을 준다. 그럼에도 불구하고 이러한 모형을 이해하고 해석하기 위해 참고할 수 있는 방법론 연구가 국내외에 부족한 상황이다. 이에 본 연구는 전체 매개모형의 틀 안에서 비일관적 매개모형을 일정한 기준에 따라 분류하고 관련 개념들을 소개하며, 비일관적 매개모형 상황에서 내용영역 연구자들이 정당한 해석을 도출할 수 있도록 실제적인 해석의 방향을 제시하고자 한다. 본문에서는 우선 일반적인 매개모형 분석의 관점을 설명하고, 이러한 절차를 그대로 이용했을 때 발생할 수 있는 모순되는 결과인 비일관적 매개모형에 대해 논의한다. 비일관적 매개모형은 두 가지 정의 유형으로 상호 독립적이지 않게 사용되고 있다. 따라서 각각의 정의 방식을 상세히 설명하며 서로 어떠한 논리적 포함관계를 갖는지 살펴본다. 특히 비일관적 매개모형의 두 번째 정의의 경우 매개모형 내 억제효과가 존재하는데, 억제효과는 다중 회귀분석의 관점에서 주로 논의되어 왔으나 매개모형의 관점에서는 수리적으로 심도있게 소개되지 못하였다. 그러므로 매개모형 내 억제효과의 수리적인 풀이를 통해, 비일관적 매개모형이 보일 수 있는 특징들을 시각화하여 전달함으로써 모형에 대한 이해를 높인다. 다음으로 실제 비일관적 매개모형의 국내외 문헌들을 탐색하고 수합한 뒤 해석의 경향성을 구조화하여 제안한다. 이때 각 유형들은 이론적인 의미에서의 분류가 아닌 실제 연구자가 경로를 해석하는데 적용할 수 있는 기준과 내용을 중심으로 탐색하고, 유형별로는 구체적인 사례를 들어 설명한다. 마지막으로 지금까지의 이론과 해석을 정리하는 구조도로 유형의 구분과 개념이 그려질 수 있도록 전체 내용을 종합하고, 본 연구가 갖는 의의와 한계에 대해 논한다.;The mediational model is one of the most commonly studied research topics in social sciences as well as psychology, but there are some instances where research is difficult to interpret, and one of them is inconsistent mediation. Inconsistent mediation refers to either where the direct and indirect effect have differing signs or a suppression model where the magnitude of the direct effect exceeds that of a total effect. Despite the difficulty of interpretation involved, there is not enough methodological study for reference. Thus, this study aims to classify inconsistent mediation and introduce related concepts, and to propose a categorized pattern that one can refer to for proper result interpretation. We first outline the traditional mediation analysis method and its problems with respect to inconsistent mediation. We then discuss the theoretical and methodological concepts of inconsistent medication, and we explore its empirical studies and structuralize the patterns of interpretation. Finally, we discuss the implications as well as the limitations of this study.
