Abstract
;This thesis presents with the study on to what extent the choreographic intention and the theme, namely‘introspection on life and death through the features of Buddhist samsara’, set during the stage of designing the dance work「Immortal life through passage of time」were effectively expressed in the work. Its purpose is to examine how the features of samsara were integrated in the movements of Korean dance and the choreographer’s original dance method, along with the artistic meaning that this realizes. The researcher created the work around the theme of Buddhist ‘samsara’in order to somewhat relieve the humans’ selfishness and anxiety over life and death. The researcher discovered that there are few dance works created around the theme of samsara, and felt the necessity to study one, and thereby publicize and historicize it. To make this happen, the study was carried out through the combination of literature review and practice based research. The processof this study consists of the first step plan and design, the second choreograph and practice, the third perform and appreciate, the fourth analyse and evaluate. Firstly, the theme and the content of「Immortal life through passage of time」were set up through literature review, and the features of‘circularity’,‘repeatability’, and ‘perpetuality’of samsara derived based on the content of the review were established as the thematic elements. These were combined with the inherent characteristics of ‘circle’, which has the symbolic meaning of samsara. This was associated with‘space’, ‘movement’, and ‘time’of the work and realized into a dance work. The result of studying「Immortal life through passage of time」with the focus on the relationship between such theme and the composition is as below. Firstly, samsara is described as a return in the work. This was shown as the circle, the objet used in the work, played a role of revealing the relationship between the ‘circularity’ and ‘spatiality’. Secondly, restricting the space through the circle resulted in the energy flow moving in one direction, which appeared as an expression of ‘the constancy of spatiality’ in the work. Thirdly, the choreography based on the relationship between ‘repeatability’ and ‘movement’ created the new world of ‘changeable space’. Representing the repetitive characteristics of samsara only through movements opened the new world ofspace for the choreographer and thereby brought about the expansion of the composition of content. Fourthly, it was possible to come up with an expression that represents unlimited transcendence by associating perpetuity with time. ‘Gong’(空), the stage of becoming free from everything, was expressed by completely clearing the stage, thereby portraying the transcendence in terms of time and space. The title of the work has been translated to English such that it sufficiently expresses the significance and substance of samsara. Thus, it should be known that it is different from the Korean title at the time of performance. Finally, the researcher realized that it is possible to concentrate on the movements inherent in body through the compositional method that focuses on the features of samsara that consists of karma and samsara. The significance of the study is that, through this, one experienced the method of expressing externally and established an original dance language. Through this, the researcher has received a lot of help in establishing the artistic values on stage, and seeks to contribute in creating a new way of expression.
