Abstract
Modern zoos have deviated from the initial form of menagerie and has transformed into the role of a Conservation Centre. Zoos focus on enhancing the value of the ecological system as an environmental factor by preserving the biodiversity. As zoos have changed to Conservation Centre, change in display and the method of viewing is required. Omoriyama Zoo in Japan is reorganizing the deteriorated facilities in steps to enhance its environment. Omoriyama Zoo aims to complete the enlargement of the ‘Monkey House’ in December 2020 and is expected to open in March 2021. The purpose of this study is to install environmental sculptures in the newly renovated ‘Monkey House’ and to conduct a design research that can be shared and experienced with the public through harmony with the environment beyond simple structures. First of all, we explored the conceptual changes, classification, and functions of environmental sculptures through theoretical consideration, and based on these findings, we found that environmental sculptures are important not only in the surrounding environment but also in their relationship with the public. Therefore, to develop a design concept that takes this into account, the research was divided into social, spatial and user-understanding, and these three elements were found to be interlocked with each other. In particular, in the area of user-understanding, we visited the Seoul Grand Park Zoo since Covid-19 made it impossible to visit Japan and conducted an observation survey to find out what needs to be fundamentally improved from the visitors’ perspective. As a result, we were able to observe the common behavior pattern of adults having to lift up their child due to their short height at every visit, and based on this, the design direction was decided. As a result, the step-type structure was developed based on the fact that it can be a resting place for adults and enables children to watch at a higher stance. Based on this structure, the shape was designed based on the external characteristics of the five different types of monkeys ready to be placed into the ‘Monkey House’, so that the symbolic value could be conveyed effectively. 1) The ‘Colobus guereza’ has a unique hairstyle that looks like a hat, and U-shaped white long fur that looks like a cape, 2) The ‘Symphalangus syndactylus’ has long arms and a vocal sac, 3) The ‘Cercopithecus neglectus’ has yellow fur on the forehead and a long white beard around the mouth, 4) The ‘Lemur catta’ has a white and black striped tail, and 5) The ‘Varecia variegata’ has a fur that looks like a white scarf. This work aims to become a symbolic sculpture of Omoriyama Zoo that provides visual and emotional satisfaction to visitors in combination with spatial context, while providing open communication with flexible viewing methods through autonomy, thereby providing mutual understanding.
