현대인의 인지적 종결욕구를 주제로 한 무용창작작품 「Undefinable」에 관한 연구

Abstract

현대사회는 과거 농업사회에서 산업사회로 대전환되는 근대화 과정을 거치며 오늘날까지 끊임없이 변화해 왔다. 근대화는 과거 전통사회에서 인간을 구속하고 있던 것으로부터의 해방, 즉 ‘개체화’를 시작으로 이루어졌다. 교통, 통신 기술의 발달로 인해 사회는 세계화되었고, 이러한 변화는 국가 간 교류가 증대되는 긍정적 측면과 모든 사회의 위험이 전 지구에 평등화되는 부정적 측면을 동시에 품고 있다. 현대사회는 개개인의 자아 정체성을 강조하며 이들의 자율성과 자기결정권을 높여주었지만, 모든 위험과 맞닥뜨려 해결하고 감수하는 과정도 모두 개인에게 전가시켰다. 4차 산업혁명의 흐름 속에서 급속도로 변모해가는 우리 사회는 그동안 사회를 구성해 온 모든 요소들을 순식간에 옛것으로 치부하며 개개인의 삶의 불확실성을 가속화시켰다. 이러한 사회의 구조적 변화에 영향을 받은 현대인들은 필연적으로 불안, 우울, 고독과 같은 일정 수준의 부정적 심리를 항상 내재한 채 삶을 살아가게 되었다. 복잡한 현재와 불확실한 미래에 대한 불안감이 증폭되면서 현대인으로서 살아가는 각 개인들은 즉각적이고 확실하게 결론을 지으려는 경향을 보이기도 한다. 이는 자신의 감정을 처리하고 반응하는 데 ‘인지적 종결욕구’가 동기가 되기 때문이다. 이에 연구자는 현대인 각 개인이 불확실한 상황을 마주했을 때 어떻게 반응하고 처리하는가에 대해 사회심리학적 고찰을 바탕으로 작품을 창작하였다. 본 연구는 빠르고 쉽게 손에 넣을 수 있는 진실을 찾는 현대인들이 불확실한 상태를 견디기 어려워하며 틀에 박힌 삶에서 안정감을 찾으려는 모습에 대한 관심을 토대로 무용창작작품 「Undefinable」(2020)을 안무하고 이에 대해 분석하였다. 작품은 총 세 장으로 구성하였고, 급변하는 환경 속에서 끊임없이 겪게 되는 심리상태에 매몰되기보다 주체적이고 현명하게 삶을 살기위해 불확실성에 대한 포용적인 자세를 가져야 함을 나타내는 내용을 담아 작품을 전개하였다. 각 장면의 주제 및 내용, 공간구성과 무용수의 이동경로 및 움직임, 오브제와 의상의 상징적 의미를 나누어 분석하였고 그 결과는 다음과 같다. 1장은 ‘뚜렷하나 모호한’으로 자신의 관념에 사로잡혀 내면의 불안감을 종결욕구에 따라 일시적으로 해소하며 일상을 지속시켜 나가려는 현대인의 모습을 표현하였다. 무대 앞쪽을 일상의 영역인 사회적 공간으로 설정하였고, 현대인이 사회적 환경으로부터 심리적 영향을 받는 상태를 나타내기 위해 무대 뒤쪽에 설정한 내적 공간과의 경계선상에서 작품을 시작하였다. 급변하는 외부환경의 불확실성을 드러내고자 무용수 너머 내적 공간 안에 회색 천 오브제를 설치하고 흐릿하게 보이도록 의도하였다. 자신이 만들어 놓은 틀 속에서 변함없이 살아가고자 하는 주체의 완고한 태도를 보여주기 위해 마음의 틀을 상징하는 사각형 부분조명들을 사용하였고, 해당 영역 안으로 무용수의 움직임을 최대한 제한시키며 거부, 모면, 집착과 같은 인간의 심리와 종결욕구 발현 과정을 보여주고자 하였다. 또한 주체의 강한 의지와 비장함이 느껴지도록 저음의 묵직한 피아노 소리가 돋보이는 버전의 곡을 사용하였다. 2장은 ‘뚜렷해질 수 없는 모호함’으로 무용수는 끊임없이 변화가 거듭되는 불안정한 외부환경에 심리적으로 휘둘리는 모습을 내적 공간에서 묘사한다. 변화 자체에 대한 종결을 추구할수록 점점 더 모호해져만 가는 사회적 현상을 상징적으로 드러내기 위해 움직이는 무용수의 신체 일부가 계속 오브제에 가려져 흐릿하게 보이도록 연출하였다. 뻗고 세우는 확장된 움직임을 통해 변화로부터의 탈피 욕망을 표현하였고, 연이어 무너지고 미끄러지는 움직임으로 연결시켜 이러한 주체의 의지가 반복적으로 좌절되는 것을 나타내었다. 또한 바에 길게 걸쳐놓은 회색 천 오브제에 창살무늬의 고보조명을 비추어 불완전한 상황에 대한 불안 심리와 증폭되는 종결욕구로 인해 위태로운 주체의 상태를 극대화시켜 보여주고자 하였다. 음악이 단조에서 장조로 바뀌며 격정적으로 선율이 상승해갈 때 무용수의 움직임을 확장시키고, 머리를 쓸어 올리거나 바닥에 주저앉는 움직임을 통해 주체의 내적 갈등과 혼란스러움을 강조하였다. 마지막에는 순간적으로 움직임과 음악의 정지 시점을 맞추어 숨이 멎을 듯한 긴장감을 조성함으로써 감정 통제력을 잃어버릴 만큼 종결욕구가 고조된 주체가 내적 갈등에 시달리고 있음을 강조하여 보여주었다. 3장은 ‘모호하기에 가능한’으로 주체가 변화 자체를 통제할 수 없다는 사실을 깨닫고 자신의 마음의 경계를 허물며 삶 속의 불확실함을 수용하는 모습으로 나아가는 과정을 표현하였다. 한껏 수축해 웅크리고 있는 무용수에게 푸른색 탑 조명을 비춤으로써 주체 내면의 인식전환의 순간을 보여주고자 하였다. 개개인마다의 틀을 상징하는 오브제 바(barre)를 넘어 무용수가 상수 쪽으로 점차 이동해 가고 회색 천의 형태를 다양하게 변형시키는 움직임을 통해 주체의 변화 의지를 표현하였다. 1장 주제 선율이 반복되며 잔잔하게 흘러가다 아주 강렬한 음률로 끝을 맺는데, 이때 사회적 공간을 가로지르는 길 조명을 사용하여 1장에 존재했던 사각 부분조명들을 관통하듯 이를 따라 무용수가 상수 뒤에서 하수 앞쪽으로 나아가도록 연출하였다. 삶에서의 급격한 변화는 위협처럼 다가오지만, 그 안에는 기회가 잠재해 있다는 것을 함축적으로 나타내고자 신비로운 분위기의 보라색 조명을 사용하여 작품을 마무리하였다. 이상과 같이 현대인의 인지적 종결욕구를 주제로 안무한 무용창작작품 「Undefinable」을 통해, 연구자는 복잡해지고 급속도로 변모해 가는 현대사회에서 현대인들이 종결욕구에 매몰되어 인지하지 못한 불확실성의 잠재된 긍정적 가치를 인식할 때 보다 현명하고 주체적인 삶을 살아갈 수 있게 됨을 상징적으로 제시하고자 하였다.;Since the modernization process caused great transformation from agricultural to industrial society, the world is facing endless change till today. The modernization has been realized by the process of objectification which refers to emancipation from what restrained the human being in the past traditional society. Globalization, due to the development of transportation and communication technology, embraces both its positive side where the exchange between the states is increased and the negative side where social risk is spread out equally around the globe. The modernization process raised autonomy and self-determination of the individuals, but this meant that the individuals should now bear much of the risks and problems for solution. The flow of the 4th industrial revolution accelerates the uncertainty of individual life. By this structural change of modern society, individuals constantly carry certain level of negative psychology such as the anxiety, depression and loneliness. As anxiety due to the complicated present and uncertain future increases, people in the modern world tend to pursue immediate and clear conclusions regarding excessive choices they face. This can be explained by 'the need for cognitive closure.' Accordingly, the researcher created the work based on the social psychological study regarding how individuals react to uncertainty in to modern world. This research aimed to study the psychic of the modern people who longs for quick and tangible answers in the realm of constant uncertainty through choreographing the creative choreographic work 「Undefinable」(2020). The work is composed of three chapters in total. The work indicates that people should not be immersed in a psychologically unstable state due to constantly changing everyday environment but should try to nurture an attitude to adopt and pursue a proactive life. The researcher analyzed the theme and contents of each scene, spatial composition, dancer’s moving path and movement, and the symbolic meaning of object and custom separately. Chapter 1, ‘clear but ambiguous,' describes an individual who attempts to temporarily solve his or her anxiety faced in daily life based on the need for cognitive closure. The front side of stage is set as ‘social space’ of daily life and the back side of the stage is set as the ‘internal space’ of the individual. This chapter unfold in ‘social space.’ The vaguely visualized gray cotton object installed at the back of the stage signifies the state of uncertainty of the external environment due to constant change. In order to show the obstinate attitude of the individual trying to live a stable life within a static frame created by him or herself, the researcher used rectangle partial lights and limited dancer's movements in that area. The dancer shows individual's psychological states, such as rejection, avoidance, and obsession, and her need for cognitive closure. In addition, researcher selected a low pitched and heavy piano sound version music so that the individual’s strong will and determination could be felt. Chapter 2, ‘ambiguousness that cannot be cleared,' shows in the ‘internal space’ the dancer psychologically swayed by the unstable external environment . In order to show that the more individual seeks closure the more obscure the situation becomes, the researcher made the dancer’s body look blurry continuously covered by a gray cotton object. The researcher expressed individual’s desire to escape from the unpredictable situation with expanded movements of stretching and lifting, and showed frustration of her will through falling and sliding movements. Also, the researcher used plaid patterned gobo light to show the maximized risky state of the individual due to the anxiety from incompleteness and the intensified need for closure. As music changes from the minor to the major and the melody goes up, the researcher tried to highlight the individual’s internal complication and confusion through movements such as sweeping her hair up or sitting flop in the floor. Finally, the researcher formed a breathtaking tension via stopping music and any movement at the same time to show that the individual reached the climax suffering from the internal conflict. Chapter 3, 'possibility of ambiguousness,' shows how the individual realizes the fact that change cannot be stopped and accepts uncertainty in her life. The researcher tried to show this cognitive moment of an individual by flashing the blue top spotlight back onto the crouching dancer. The dancer expressed individual's will of change to accept the embedded uncertainty by going further over the end of the object bar, symbolizing the inner border, and then changing the shape of gray cotton in various ways. As the theme melody of the chapter 1 is repeated and finished with very strong accents, the long diagonal light effect across the ‘social space’ comes out and the dancer walks forward, following the light. The work ends with a purple light of mysterious mood, implying that drastic changes in life often carry unexpected opportunities. As above, through the creative choreographic work 「Undefinable」, the researcher tried to symbolically imply that positive acceptance of uncertainty in the modern world is the key to let individuals wisely lead a proactive life.
