Abstract

This thesis is an analysis study on No.1 <A Cradle Song>, No.2 <The Highland Balou>, No.3 <Sephestia’s Lullaby>, and No.4 <A Charm> of total five songs of a song cycle 《A Charm of Lullabies, Op.41》by Benjamin Britten(1913-1976) of the graduation recital program works for completing the author’s master’s course. 《A Charm of Lullabies, Op.41》 composed in 1947 with the subject of lullaby is a piece of music using different poems of 5 poets. Four songs that the author analyzed were composed with a variety of forms such as through-composed form, strophic form, binary form, and so on, and each song showed multiple forms applying the characteristics of the poems. Chromatic melody, recital-type melody, jumping interval, and so on were used in the melody of vocal music part; vocal melody, parallel motion, and contrary motion were performed in the accompaniment part; and progression of vocal music part was suggested in the introductory part. Unlike existing lullabies playing quietly to make children sleep, A Charm of Lullabies demonstrates Britten’s unique composing methods. In particular, pedal point and dotted rhythm were used in No 2, reminding a piece of dance music playing a Scottish bagpipe; and No 4 consisted of lots of lyrics with the contents that children would be punished if they did not sleep quietly and performed with fast tempo, which showed somewhat scary atmosphere for children rather than lullabies. Like this, the characteristic of this song cycle shown through the analysis of 《A Charm of Lullabies, Op.41》 is the repetition of basic melody, which is the general composition method of folk songs. Based on the composition technique combined with this characteristic of folk songs and polished modern sense, he made a song cycle under the theme of lullaby with poems by five different poets. The author examined Britten’s lifetime and the characteristics of Op.41 fully showing his musical characteristics, researched various musical expressions presented in lyrics and score of each work in the researcher’s perspective, and suggested what to be kept in mind for the actual performance of each song in this thesis.;본 논문은 필자의 석사과정 이수를 위한 졸업연주회 프로그램 작품 중 벤자민 브리튼(Benjamin Britten, 1913-1976)의 연가곡《A Charm of Lullabies(자장가의 마법), Op.41》5곡 중, 제1곡 <A Cradle Song(요람의 노래)>, 제2곡 <The Highland Balou(하일랜드 자장가)>, 제3곡 <Sephestia’s Lullaby(세페스티아의자장가)>, 제4곡 <A Charm(마법)> 에 관한 분석 연구이다. 1947년 작곡된 《A Charm of Lullabies, Op.41》는 자장가를 소재로 하며, 총 다섯 곡이 각기 다른 다섯 시인의 시를 사용한 작품이다. 필자가 분석한 네 개의 가곡들은 각각 통절형식, 유절형식, 2부분 형식 등 다양한 형식으로 작곡되었으며, 각 곡은 시에 따라 특징을 반영하여 다양한 형식으로 나타내었다. 성악부 선율은 순차진행과 반음계적 선율, 낭송조 선율, 도약음정 등이 사용되었고, 반주부는 성악 선율과 병진행, 반진행으로 진행되기도 했으며, 도입부에 성악부의 진행을 미리 제시하기도 하였다. 기존에 알고 있는 아이를 재우기 위해 조용한 분위기로 연주되는 자장가와는 달리, <자장가의 마법>은 브리튼의 독특한 작곡 방식을 사용하여 만들어졌다는 것을 알 수 있는데, 특히 제2곡은 Pedal Point적인 부분과 붓점 리듬의 사용으로 마치 스코틀랜드의 백파이프로 연주되는 춤곡을 연상시키기도 하며, 제4곡은 조용히 잠들지 않으면 벌을 줄 것이라는 내용으로 많은 가사와 빠른 박자로 진행하여 자장가라고 하기엔 아이에게 다소 무서움을 느낄 수 있는 분위기를 보여주기도 한다. 이처럼 <자장가의 마법>의 분석을 통해 나타난 이 연가곡의 특징은 기본 선율이 반복되는 것인데, 이는 민요의 일반적인 구성 방법이다. 이러한 민요의 특징에 세련된 현대적 감각을 더한 작곡기법으로 그는 자장가라는 주제로 각기 다른 다섯명의 시인의 시를 하나의 연가곡으로 만들어 내었다. 필자는 브리튼의 생애와 그의 음악적 특징이 잘 나타난 Op.41의 특징을 살펴보고, 각 작품에서 가사와 악보에 제시된 다양한 음악적 표현들을 연주자의 관점에서 연구하고, 곡마다 실제 연주하는 데 있어서 유의할 점을 본 논문에서 제시하였다.
