Abstract
A virtual character has stepped into the real world by interacting with humans through one-person media. A virtual character refers to a technological form embodied in a digital image and is the one that represents the identity of a non-human through a fictional setting. Contents of virtual characters spread via online network with users of one-person media actively participating. Naturally, virtual characters emerge simultaneously across the world, and connect with the majority of population beyond regions and culture. And thus, the research focuses on the step-by-step analysis of individuation of a virtual character based on the assumption that a virtual character can establish the non-human identity in the process of communication, producing discourse. A virtual character differentiates itself from the human subject of both mass media and one-person media because it is the non-human with the body composed of digital code. The virtual character to be discussed in this paper is not an autonomous machine entirely independent of humans. However, users of one-person media assume the fictional setting of a virtual character to be true through make-believe using their imaginations. This further supports that virtual characters are not the sole outcome of technical development. Accordingly, the study aims to shed light on the ontology of virtual characters as machines along with a fictional imagination all from the humanistic perspective. In the second chapter, based on Pierre Levy’s ontological quadrivium, 90 virtual characters from 27 different countries will be categorized. Levy suggests that virtual and actual can be distinguished by an substance and event, indicating that there are four different types. Characters with virtuality can be categorized into ① virtual substance-virtual event ② virtual substance-actual event ③ actual substance-virtual event, and each displays transcendence, similarity and inconsistency. One that displays transcendence is the virtual character created by CGI, having no original model to be based on. These characters follow the lifestyle of the fictional world never experienced by humans, and locate themselves beyond the experience of the users. Meanwhile, though a virtual character that displays similarity is the one created by CGI with no entity, it mimics humans in much details, close to the reality. Virtual characters fall under this type do not only imitate the appearance of humans but also the lifestyle and identity of them. Unlike the other two types mentioned earlier, virtual characters display inconsistency when transferred with the actual humans’ bodies and behaviors through VR technology. The inconsistency arises from the conflict between fictional persona of the virtual character and the original human persona. However, such dissonance are often the fun factors for users. In the third chapter, individuation of a virtual character focusing on the Gilbert Simondon’s ontology of technological objects will be analyzed step by step. Simondon argues that technological objects become an individual from the pre-individual state through individuation and portrays this process in three steps of “element” to “individual” to “ensemble.” According to his argument, elements have not yet become a machine but still are the separate parts of the machine. At this level, elements are the heteronomous beings which cannot interact on their own but must use humans as a medium to unite with other elements. Likewise, virtual characters are the technological form created by some humans combining technological elements. Afterwards, the machine proceeds with internal resonance that integrates internal elements in a systematic way. In a similar context, virtual characters establish the identity of non-humans from a fictional setting through self-interpellation. Through such individuation, the virtual character does not only become an entity with form but also with inner self. The virtual character that completed individuation interacts with humans through a medium of one-person contents and establish associated medium (milieu associe) between humans and machines. Users spread the contents of virtual characters with openness and spreadability of digital contents and actively engage in in the ontological signification of virtual characters. Ultimately such virtual characters and users realize ensemble, in which the group of nature’s organisms and technological objects coexist in the trans-individual relation. In the fourth chapter, based on the theory of Rosi Braidotti, the paper discusses about polyphonic implication of a virtual character. A virtual character throughout the entire process of individuation encompasses the existence of human beings. At the element stage, humans mediate and unite technological elements and mold the appearance of a virtual character. At the individual stage, users interpret the non-human identity of a virtual character and contemplate on the ontological implication of humans and non-humans. Users restructure, modify, and share the contents of a virtual character by understanding identities of humans and machines and seeking ways for them to coexist. In this process, a virtual character and user each establishes its own identity by recognizing each other’s existence. Therefore, one-person media becomes the differing ground where disparate species coexist after humans and non-humans engage in transversal communication. Virtual characters functions as the intersection that links the present and the future. Through a fictional setting, a virtual character replaces non-human beings and demands ways for humans and non-humans to coexist. Users can then virtually experience the future where humans coexist with highly advanced machines including artificial intelligence and humanoid through a virtual character. Therefore, users interact with virtual characters and possibly imagine the future where non-humans pervade in humans lives and together form the community. In this sense, virtual characters carry much significance as they are regarded as the precedent forecasting the posthuman era where humans and non-humans, virtual and actual, and information and materiality converge.
