Abstract
Interpersonal relationship affects the quality of human life through the formation of identity, development personality and establishment of self-realization. Adolescence, in particular, is a period when meaningful relationship with others outside the home increases, and school is the place where adolescents spend the most time of the day. Interpersonal relationships during adolescence are formed mainly in the school. Adolescents’ positive psychological and emotional stability acquired through interpersonal relationship with teachers and peers in school lead to academic motivations. In this regard, this study focused on adolescents’ academic helplessness and grit among various non-cognitive factors of learning. The purpose of this study is to determine whether there are adolescents with different developmental characteristics from the general prediction in terms of the transitional relationship between the latent types of interpersonal relationship in school and the latent types of academic helplessness and grit and explore personal and family casual conditions that affect them. First, its analysis found latent types of interpersonal relationship: negative interpersonal relationship class, average interpersonal relationship class and positive interpersonal relationship class. Second, the study identified three latent types of adolescents’ academic helplessness and grit: academic helplessness class, average academic helplessness and grit class, and grit class. Third, the probability of the latent types of interpersonal relationship in school transiting to academic helplessness and grit class was nine (9), and the negative interpersonal relationship class had higher probability of transiting to the academic helplessness class while the positive interpersonal relationship class had higher probability of transiting to the grit class. Fourth, the study confirmed two types of adolescents who had different developmental characteristics from the general prediction in terms of the transitional relationship between the latent types of interpersonal relationship in school and the latent types of academic helplessness and grit: adolescents who had a high level of grit despite negative interpersonal relationship in school and those who had a high level of academic helplessness despite positive interpersonal relationship in school. Fifth, the study identified two combinations of casual conditions in adolescents with a low level of grit despite their negative interpersonal relationship in school. These findings suggested the necessity of continuous interest and study on the two types of adolescents with different developmental characteristics from the general prediction in terms of the transitional relationship between the latent types of interpersonal relationship in school and the latent types of academic helplessness and grit. Indeed, these types of adolescents have received little interest from the social welfare study, whose focus has been placed mainly on those with vulnerable social groups such as poverty and abuse. The interpersonal relationship in school, academic helplessness and grit are the factors that have a long-term impact on the development of adolescents. Thus, it is necessary to identify adolescents as a potential risk group in our society so as to pay attention to them. It is also important to create systems inside and outside of school for early detection of the two types of adolescents and channels for active intervention. Considering that such screening and intervention require expertise, continuous education and training need to be provided for professional personnel in schools. In addition, it is essential to operate various psychological education programs to build up adolescents’ internal resources and promote close cooperation between experts in various fields for adolescents who are in need of treatment. Second, this study conducted a fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis of adolescents with a high level of grit despite their negative interpersonal relationship in school in order to identify the personal and family factors affecting them. The analysis found six factors, including four personal factors – attention concentration, subjective academic achievement assessment, specific career decision and self-respect – and two family factors – private education and parenting attitude -. Based on these findings, the study suggested that support needs to be made to improve the strengths of both individual adolescents and the home environment such as collaboration between schools and local community organizations and development of programs that adolescents can enjoy in the process of challenging and solving tasks. Third, it is important to ensure continuous studies on adolescents’ academic helplessness and grit and efforts from schools and communities based on the findings, and adolescents’ interpersonal relationship in school needs to be considered as important because it has a long-term impact on their development through academic helplessness and grit. This study is of significance as, first, it confirmed that there are adolescents who have different developmental characteristics from the general prediction that the negative interpersonal relationship leads to academic helplessness, and the positive interpersonal relationship leads to grit, explored the casual conditions affecting them, and second, provided the grounds for expanding the scope of social welfare study to general adolescents from vulnerable social groups such as poverty and abuse.
