dc.description.abstract | Purpose: The purpose of creating an extensive reading (ER) program is as follows: 1) to develop the motivation to read for pleasure; 2) to improve vocabulary and reading speed; 3) to develop a habit of reading extensively; and 4) to improve the four language skills. The activities designed in this textbook sample reflect the above features. Rationale: Reading has been one of the most emphasized skills in many traditional EFL classrooms (Susser, B., & Robb, T. N. 1990). However, learners do not voluntarily read as many books as they can and they do not incorporate their skills in their classes. In addition, learners do not have many chances to use English outside of the classroom (Susser, B., & Robb, T. N. 1990). Through participation in an ER program, learners will begin by reading books outside of the classroom. According to Bell (2001), we are able to see how ER affects student's speed and comprehension of the materials presented. The results indicate that participants exposed to "extensive" reading achieved both significantly faster reading speeds and significantly higher scores on measures of reading comprehension. | - |
