Factors Impacting the Enrollment, Participation and Advancement of Women in STEM Higher Education Studies in Ecuador

Abstract

The qualitative study examined the factors impacting the enrollment, participation, and advancement of women in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) higher education studies in Ecuador. The necessity for the engagement of women in these fields is no longer in dispute, as it is considered a boost for development. However, gender inequalities persist worldwide. In Ecuador, even though the enrollment records for higher education and degrees have shown a majority presence of women, compared to men, females are still underrepresented in STEM fields at the educational level. An analytical framework was developed based on four factors influencing the enrollment, participation, and advancement of women in STEM studies which remain consistent in the literature: individual, familial, societal, and educational. Through the in-depth interviews of 20 female STEM students enrolled in two recognized higher education institutions in Ecuador: Escuela Superior Politécnica del Ejército (ESPE) and Escuela Superior Politécnica del Litoral (ESPOL), this research sought to understand the perspectives of female university students enrolled in STEM higher education and the factors that may act as drivers and barriers for women in STEM higher education studies in Ecuador. Data from the interviews demonstrates the factors which influence women are diverse, which confirms the multifactorial nature and complexity of the phenomena. Findings reveal significant factors as motivators, such as interest and a positive attitude towards science from an early age, parental financial or emotional support and stimulation, quality of education and motivation at primary school and secondary school, and scholarships offered at the pre-graduate level.
