MSMEs doing E-commerce

Abstract

Observed to have an abundance of MSMEs, developing countries such as the Philippines are now turning to the opportunities that are being offered by the world wide web through e-commerce. However, the Philippines is also considered as one of the most vulnerable countries in the world, especially to natural disasters. In as much as there are opportunities in e-commerce adoption among MSMEs, challenges and issues also exist. This study aims to investigate and analyze the relationship between MSMEs’ e-commerce adoption and enterprise profitability and sustainability. Using primary data gathered from MSMEs in Leyte Province, Philippines, the findings of the study showed that e-commerce adoption provided a positive effect in the business operations of MSMEs, both in terms of profitability and sustainability. The findings further showed a parallel correspondence on the existing literature on e-commerce benefits and challenges, as well as its effect on developing economies. Recognizing the effect of e-commerce adoption among MSMEs, the study concludes by suggesting actions that intend to address the current gaps in the implementation of e-commerce adoption in the country.;소규모 영세 사업장들(MSMEs)이 발달한 필리핀과 같은 개발도상국들은 이제 전자상거래와 같이 인터넷 환경이 제공하는 기회들을 통해 변화를 모색하고 있다. 그러나 재난에 가장 취약한 국가 중 하나인 필리핀의 영세사업장들에게는 이처럼 전자상거래 도입을 통한 기회가 열려 있는 만큼 어려움 또한 존재한다. 따라서 본 연구는 소규모 영세 사업장의 전자상거래 채택과 기업의 영리성과 지속가능성 간의 관계를 밝히는 것을 목적으로 한다. 이를 위해 필리핀의 레이테 지방(Leyte Province)를 대상으로 주자료를 수집하여 분석한 결과, 전자상거래의 도입이 수익성과 지속가능성의 측면에서 소규모 영세 사업자들의 기업 경영에 긍정적인 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 아울러 이 같은 결과는 단지 개발도상국에 미치는 긍정적인 영향뿐만 아니라, 전자상거래가 주는 이점과 당면한 문제의 측면에서도 선행연구와 일치하는 경향을 보이는 것이 확인되었다. 본 연구 결과를 통해 소규모 영세사업자들에게 전자상거래도입이 미치는 긍정적인 효과를 확인하였으며, 해당국가의 전자상거래의 시행에 있어 현재 당면한 격차를 해소하기 위한 방법을 제안하였다.
