Abstract
In this dissertation, I provide a way to see the producers in Plato’s Republic as craftsmen who are virtuous. Many interpreters of the Republic take the producer class in Socrates’ Kallipolis as a resemblance of the Appetite of the soul and claim that the producers can only value appetitive pleasures. In this view, the producers are unjust individuals who can only be forced or tamed to merely act justly by the oppressive reign of the guardian class or by the lure of money. Contrary to this wide-held view, I argue that the producers are not unjust individuals in the Kallipolis, but rather, that they can become moderate due to their own craft of producing. In the second chapter, I give a brief summary of the city-soul analogy of the Republic to provide some background on this issue and examine Bernard Williams’ and C.D.C. Reeve’s argument which played a significant role in forming the popular opinion that the producers are unjust. Williams and some scholars have interpreted the city-soul analogy to infer that the producers are appetitive. I argue that we cannot infer that the producers are appetitive from the city-soul analogy. Reeve explicitly claims that the producers are appetitive and argues that they can act justly because of their love of money in the Kallipolis in much detail. I examine his argument and show that a person with an appetitive soul cannot act justly in a stable manner. Since the Kallipolis requires stable just action of the individuals, it turns out that the producers in the Kallipolis cannot be appetitive. I argue that the producers need to manage their appetitive desires in a self-restrained manner and show that this is only possible when they have at least the virtue of moderation in their souls. The third chapter is concerned with the status of the producers and the relationship between the political function of the citizens and their inner virtues. By examining the creation of the Kallipolis, I argue that the one-man one-craft principle Socrates enforces as the basis of the First Polis becomes justice (“doing one’s own work”) in the Kallipolis. I argue that one can only genuinely qualify as a citizen by having a craft in the Kallipolis and that Socrates connects one’s inner virtues closely with doing one’s political function well. For these reasons, I claim that the producers should not be seen as “money-makers” who only do their work for the love of money based on self-interested desires and motivations of bodily pleasures, but that they should be seen strictly as “craftsmen” who are under the discipline of their own crafts. The fourth chapter deals with Plato’s notion of craft, or technē, and I show how the producers can become moderate individuals by becoming genuine craftsmen. I argue that Plato’s notion of craft is knowledge that always aims at the good of its object. However, there are many disputes on the value-neutrality of Plato’s notion of craft. I address these views and claim that Plato strictly separates the craft from the fallible individual. I argue that a craftsman can only use her craft for vicious ends qua human being, not qua craftsman. Finally, I show how knowledge and practice of a craft can shape the producer’s soul to become moderate. I conclude my dissertation by addressing some limits of my interpretation.;이 논문의 목적은 플라톤의 『국가』에서의 생산자 계급이 부정의한 시민들이 아닌, 자신의 기술로 인하여 절제의 덕을 가질 수 있는 장인들로 이루어져 있음을 보이는 것이다.
