뮤지컬 <알라딘(Aladdin)>에 나타난 작곡가 앨런 멘켄(Alan Menken)의 음악적 특징 연구

Abstract

뮤지컬 <알라딘(Aladdin)>은 「천일야화」의 이야기를 기반으로, 디즈니에 의해 몇 차례에 걸쳐 각색되어 탄생하였다. 애니메이션 영화를 기반으로 아그라바 왕국의 좀도둑, 알라딘과 공주와의 사랑 그리고 마법의 램프 지니에게 세 가지 소원을 빌며 벌어지는 이야기를 뮤지컬 무대로 옮긴 작품이다. 디즈니는 이 이야기를 작곡가 앨런 멘켄(Alan Menken, 1949~ )과 함께 뮤지컬로 각색했고, 2014년 브로드웨이에서 공연을 시작했다. 그리고 2019년 디즈니는 애니메이션 영화를 리메이크하여 실사영화를 개봉했다. 뮤지컬에서 앨런 멘켄은 아랍 문화권의 음악 작법과 전통악기의 주법 및 음색을 차용하고, 다양한 장르의 음악을 통하여 아라비아의 신비로움과 브로드웨이의 화려함을 표현하였다. 브로드웨이에서 초연 이후, 토니 어워즈 등 각종 수상식에서 후보로 오르며 작품성을 인정받았고, 현재까지 1,100만 명 이상의 관객이 들며 대중에게 사랑받고 있다. 본 논문은 리메이크 방식으로 제작된 뮤지컬 <알라딘>의 음악분석을 통하여 앨런 멘켄의 음악적 특징과 뮤지컬 무대에 적용된 음악적 어법에 대해 심도 있는 연구를 목적으로 하였다. 연구 절차는 <알라딘> 작품의 변천사에 대해 알아보았고, 작곡가의 생애와 작품세계 연구, 애니메이션과 실사영화 <알라딘>의 음악적 특징 및 차이점을 살펴보았다. 1막과 2막으로 구성된 작품의 줄거리를 정리하고, 뮤지컬 전체 곡의 세부적인 음악분석을 진행하였으며, 앨런 멘켄의 음악적 스타일과 아라비아의 배경과 마법, 판타지적인 장면들을 뮤지컬 무대에서 표현하기 위해 어떠한 음악적 시도를 하였는지 연구하였다. 연구 결과 앨런 멘켄의 뮤지컬 <알라딘>을 통해 알아본 음악적 특징은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 아라비아의 선율과 음악적 기법, 음색을 사용하여 이국적인 분위기를 표현하였다. 둘째, 재즈 스윙을 중심으로 차차, 컨츄리, 탱고, 90년대 팝 발라드 등의 다양한 장르의 도입으로 뮤지컬 무대의 한계를 극복했다. 셋째, 주요 인물의 테마의 사용으로 인물의 성격과 극의 분위기를 효과적으로 표현하였으며, 테마의 변주로 인물의 심리, 스토리 암시 등의 역할을 하였다. 넷째, 장면과 인물의 대사 뒤에 배경음악이 곳곳에 사용되어 작품의 흐름을 자연스럽게 이끌어 갔다. 다섯째, 1막의 프로덕션 넘버 “나 같은 친구 없을걸”에서 앨런 멘켄의 디즈니 작품 중 아카데미 상을 받은 대표적인 곡들이 메들리 형식으로 등장하였다. 마지막으로 애니메이션과 실사영화에서 작품의 주제인 사랑, 용기, 정직, 모험을 표현하는 핵심적인 주요 넘버 5곡이 뮤지컬에도 공통으로 사용되었다. 이와 같은 뮤지컬 <알라딘>의 음악적 특징들과 애니메이션, 실사영화와의 비교를 통해, 영상에서 보여주었던 표현들을 무대에서 구현하기 위한 다양한 음악적 시도가 있었음을 확인하였다. 본 논문의 연구를 통해 앞으로 뮤지컬 음악의 연구와 발전이 지속적으로 이루어질 것을 기대하며 본 연구가 뮤지컬 음악에 조금이나마 보탬이 되기를 바란다.;This study examines the musical characteristics of the musical Aladdin, which is composed by Alan Menken(1949~). Based on an animated fantasy film in 1992, the musical Aladdin is about the story of a petty thief, Aladdin in the kingdom of Agrabah, the love of Aladdin and the princess, and the three wishes of a magic lamp, Genie. Disney adapted the story with Alan Menken and it started performing on Broadway in 2014. And in 2019, Disney released a live-action film. Allen Mencken used the musical features and traditional musical tone of the Arab culture. And through various genres of music, he expressed the mystique of Arabia and the splendor of Broadway. Since its premiere on Broadway, it has been recognized by being nominated at various awards ceremonies, including the Tony Awards, and has been loved by the public with more than 11 million viewers so far. The purpose of the study is to analyze Alan Menken's musical Aladdin and musical characteristics of the work and to know what musical attempts were made in the musical produced in a remake way. The research procedure is that I first examined the history of the musical Aladdin, the life and the work of Alan Menken and his views of the world. And then I studied the composition, musical features of the Musical Aladdin and differences of the animation and the live-action film Aladdin. I organized the plot of the first and second acts, conducted a detailed musical analysis of the entire musical, and studied Alan Menken's musical style and what musical attempts he made to express elements such as Arabian background, magic, and fantasy scenes on the musical stage. According to the study, Musical Aladdin featured the following musical characteristics. First, an exotic atmosphere was expressed using Arabian melodies, musical techniques and tones. Second, with the introduction of various genres such as Chacha, Country, Tango, and 90s pop ballads and jazz swing, he overcame the limitations of musical stage. Third, the use of the theme songs of the main character effectively expressed the character and the mood of the play, and played a role in the character's psychology and story implication as a variation of the theme. Fourth, background music was used everywhere after the lines of scenes and characters, leading the flow of the work naturally. Fifth, in the first act, production number “Friend Like Me”, in the song, representative of Alan Menken's Disney films that won Academy Awards appeared in a medley format. Finally, five key number songs expressing love, courage, honesty and adventure, which are themes of the work in animation and live-action films, were also commonly used in the musical. Through the musical characteristics of the Musical Aladdin and comparing the animation and live-action films, It was confirmed that various musical attempts were made to embody the expressions on the musical stage.
