Abstract
In modern society, modern people are exhausted due to endless competition and self-exploitation. The excessive affirmation of“You can do it.” spirit in the modern society has caused modern people to push themselves more and more, and as a result, it made them to direct the arrow of blame toward themselves. It made modern people to lose their subjective position in themselves, become bound by social norms and give up on themselves. The researcher intends to express various crowds and imperfect self-portraits of modern people who want to escape from the social structure that only emphasizes reason or rationality. Reason is what makes human beings distinct from other animals and makes us human. However, being fascinated by it, humans began to believe that only the rational is the only meaningful value. However, since reason is about distinguishing between right and wrong, by pursuing it, the deraison, which is the opposite of the reason, naturally becomes something wrong and needs to be removed. Therefore, by pursuing the rational, modern people gradually became far away from the animality, instinct, and desires of humans, which is denial of human ourselves who essentially have both rationality and irrationality at the same time. This eventually leads to self-exploitation and exhausts ourselves. German poet and philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche says that humans have both the apollonian that symbolizes reason and das Dionysische that symbolizes deraison, and that the two contradictory elements must be balanced and interacted so that humans can gain vitality. The ancient city dionysia is an example of how people were able to fully reveal, accept das Dionysische, which has been suppressed, and become fulfilled and natural. Based on this critical mind, the researcher intends to convey through the work that human being irrational, emotional, and bursting instinctive desires, is not something negative or needs to be hidden, but is actually something extremely natural. For that purpose, the researcher introduces the contradictory existences of half-human-half-fish with fish head and human body in the work, revealing and humorizing that humans are also contradictory creatures that have an irrational animal features, as symbolically revealed in the half-man, half-fish. The half-human-half-fishes in the work seem to be indolent or express their desires and perform them without delay. However, it does not feel negative, but rather feels free and liberated. And if the half-human-half-fishes feels like that, the researcher would like to convey that humans doing the same also should not feel negative. Through this process, the researcher tries to invite the modern people to the ancient Greek city dionysia, which has been hosted again in modern times in the work of researcher. The researcher's work starts with directly revealing the contradiction of human being simultaneously being both human and animal, in the form of ‘half-human-half-fish’. The modern man, revealed as a half-human-half-fish, seems to be incomplete and confused in the contradiction. In the subsequent work, the researcher expresses and presents the modern city dionysia, half-human-half-fish crowds revealing and accepting the animal part of their being and their instinct desires such as their appetite, as an escape from the vacuousness of the modern people. Here, the modern city dionysia presented by the researcher releases the suppressed human instincts and frees people from the reason that always controls us, but in fact, it is about people without rationality, without control, without order, which can be felt negative than positive if considered with rationality. However, the researcher expressed the liberated modern man in the work with thoughts that human can ultimately become complete, free, and calm by going through the festival of irrationality and gaining the momentum and power to accept the contradiction of human beings without denying and hiding it.
