위로

Abstract

To me, work gives me comfort. The work that is handled in this research is about soothing the mind and about emotion as if one reaches out to take you somewhere comfortable. To an artist, creating something is not only a physical labor that creates a new product from nothing, but also is similar to the process of looking for weak parts in the mental building, raising pillars in empty places, and like making a colleague that helps install support beams in slanting areas. Having the ability to create something does not instantly give comfort, but the process of intriguing the senses and finding the emotional connection spots gives me joy and comfort. While I keep in mind the fact that life is full of losses, or I may feel that these emotional efforts are like an endless and uncompletable fate that is unreasonable similar to the Stone of Sisyphus, I felt that leaving a copy of emotion preparing for the loss in the future is like a vaccination preparing for loss, and I was determined to carry out this work joyfully. I considered the ideal of work to be recalling a certain memory to the present that existed in the past, and thus, self-curing myself by creating something that I can keep by my side and preparing for the upcoming wounds. And the work pieces corresponded with my family life, functions as a way of comfort in different points and parted away from each other. In the thesis’s Work Division, there are several divisions in a group or series of works that expresses similar or related forms. These work divisions have shown variations with connections and independence simultaneously as if they were neighboring islands. In this thesis, I will examine how to express each varied work themes in the context of ‘self-comfort’, and how the pace of completion and the degree of articulation has acted as an effective and meaningful comfort to the author, myself. Thus, I will explore the evidence of how these comforts are triggered and conducted by linking them with each work piece, and through this, I aim to leave a document that connects these various islands. In the Chapter 2 of this thesis ‘The Development of Comfort’, I will examine the sources of each workpiece that have touched a part of my life and that I have deeply contemplated about how it gave me smooth comfort to me. Especially, I will explore 1) the reason why touch and the sense of touch is connected in the aspect of comfort methods and the expression method of the work, 2) at what points the senses obtained at the workpieces production process have given comfort, and 3) how these have been divided into situation groups. In Chapter 3 ‘The Utilization of Medium’, I will research how each work division has an realization system, what form it has to be divided into each work division, and the features centered on the work’s physical completion method. It will become a stage of contemplating how results of instant decisions reflect myself in my works that are closely entangled with my personal life. Also, in Chapter 4’s work analysis, I display the narration regarding the other side of the work’s shape and descript the definition of reenacting the comfort as a two-dimensional artwork and also as an three-dimensional installation medium. The repetitive moments of impression/time/completion that are completed by the small fragments being converged fill up each different work entity and the gaps between areas. When the gap between two entities, that appear as if they are complete different types, narrows to be perceived as a continuous life, the mutations that are at the verge of being dropped out are considered to be progressive or advanced, and obtain some weight as an individual link. An entity, that has acquired an important value right before dropping out, becomes a being of comfort that is proved merely by its own existence. In this view, I want to proceed to the next step by reexamining the diverse derivatives that have arose in between my works, seizing in one hand the valid methods and embracing works that have silently exited. ;본인에게 작업은 위로이다. 이어질 연구에서 담고 있는 작업은 마음을 달래고 편안한 곳에 가자며 손 내미는 정감에 관한 것이다. 조형하는 사람에게 있어 무언가를 만들어낸다는 것은 없던 상태에서 새로운 부산물을 내어놓는 생산적인 노동일 뿐 아니라, 마음의 건물에 부실한 부분이 없는지 찾아 들어가고, 비어있는 기둥을 대신해 일어서고, 기울어진 곳 밑에 지지대를 같이 세워주는 정비의 동료를 곁에 만들어 두는 것과 같다. 무언가 만들 줄 아는 재주가 있다는 것 자체가 안도감을 주지는 않지만, 그 과정에서 감각을 떠올리고 정감과의 연결 부위를 찾아 들어가는 것은 작가 본인에게 기쁨이자 위로가 된다. 삶은 상실을 곁에 두는 것이라는 당연한 사실을 떠올리며, 혹 이러한 감정적 노고들이 마치 시시포스의 바위처럼 끝도 없고 완수할 수도 없는 부조리한 운명처럼 여길 수도 있겠지만, 미래의 부재에 대비하여 정감의 복제본을 남겨두는 것은 마치 상실에 대비하는 예방주사처럼 여겨졌고, 본 연구자는 그 작업을 기쁘게 행하기로 다짐했다. 본인은 과거에 존재했던 확실한 감각을 현재의 근거리에 다시 세워 두는 것, 그리하여 간직할 수 있는 것을 직접 만들어 곁에 두는 것으로 스스로를 치유하고, 다가올 상처에 대비하는 것을 작업의 이상으로 삼아왔다. 그리고 작업들은 일련의 가족사와 조응하면서, 서로 다른 지점에서 위로의 기능을 하며 갈라져 나갔다. 나눠진 작업계 는 이웃하는 섬들처럼 연결고리와 독립성을 동시에 지닌 채 변주되어왔다. 이 논문에서는 ‘스스로 위로하기’의 맥락에서 변주된 각각의 작업 주제가 표현되는 방법, 완결되는 속도, 발화되는 정도가 어떤 식으로 연구자 본인에게 효과적이고 유의미한 위로로 작용했는지 헤아려 보고자 한다. 그래서 본인의 위로가 촉발되고 작동하는 근거를 각각의 작품들과 연관 지어 탐구해보고, 이를 통해 여러 섬들 사이를 연결하는 징검다리를 글로써 남겨두고자 한다. 본 논문의 제2장 ‘위로의 전개’에서 연구자 본인이 삶과 밀접하게 맞닿는 작업물로서 부드러운 위로에 대해 고심하게 하였던 각각의 원천들을 살펴볼 것이다. 특히 위로의 방식과 작업의 표현방법에 있어 감촉과 촉각이 연결된 이유를 살펴보고, 작품의 제작 과정에서 얻는 감각들이 어떤 지점에서 위로가 되었고, 그것이 어떤 상황의 무리들로 나뉘어 갔는지를 살펴볼 것이다. 제3장 ‘매체의 활용’에서는 각 작업계가 어떤 구현 체계를 갖는지, 어떠한 형태를 가지며 작업계를 가르는지, 작업의 물리적인 완결 방식을 중심으로 특징을 연구할 것이다. 본인의 개인사와 맞물려 있는 작업들이 어떤 즉각적인 선택의 결과로 본인을 투영하고 있는지 고찰하는 장이 될 것이다. 그리고 4장의 작품분석에서는 작품들의 형태 이면에 있는 서사를 조명하며, 회화와 설치 매체로 위로를 재현하는 의의를 서술한다. 작은 조각들이 모여들어서 완성하는 반복되는 인상/시간/완료의 순간들은 각기 다른 작업 개체와 그 영역의 사이를 메꾸고 있다. 마치 다른 종으로 동떨어진 듯 보이는 두 개체의 간격이 바짝 줄어들어 연속된 생으로 인식될 때, 그 중간에서 탈락하기 직전의 돌연변이들은 진보 혹은 진취로 여겨지며, 하나하나 연결 고리로서 무게를 가지게 된다. 탈락하기 적전에 건져 올려져 중요 가치를 획득한 개체는 그 자체로 증명이 되는 위로의 존재가 된다. 이러한 시각으로, 연구자의 작업 사이에 다양한 양상으로 나타난 부산물들을 다시 읽고, 유효했던 방법들을 가다듬어 한 손에 쥐고, 소리 없이 퇴장하는 작업들을 데리고 다음 단계로 나아가려 한다.
