Abstract
This study began with the recognition of conflicts between the sociocultural stereotypes towards women’s bodies and my artistic desire to exhibit them. In everyday situations where talking about women's bodies is restricted by social perception, I have developed my work by narrowing the gap between the social norms and my desire to show women’s bodies without restriction. Thus, I have established a combined painting system that can be exhibited directly or indirectly, and I would like to describe the analytical process and the content of establishing the painting system. For the content research, I reviewed the cultural, generational, and regional specificities of the Republic of Korea, and examined the background of women's desires to form a unique self-identity under control and confusion. I devised an expressional method that can be accepted from a social point of view while simultaneously telling the story of women’s bodies in a holistic way without changing the social concept by distracting the viewer's eyes. For the method of expression, it was conducted by dividing the research into 'patterning', 'folding and unfolding,’ and 'disorder'. To begin with, 'patterning' is a method of disassembling the original drawing and recombining it in the form of repetitive patterns. Similarly, 'folding and unfolding' is a method of re-editing the fragmented picture based on the effects of double-sidedness and coincidence of Korean paper after partially drawing on the folded paper. Furthermore, 'disorder' is a method of random mixing images by changing the position of the canvas and painting over the drawn ones. These methods have the visual effects of delaying the image recognition time by disturbing and distracting the viewer's eyes, so I used it as the axis of the painting system. As a result, the theme of this study, A Collective Body, resulted in a single organic form, with multiple topics about the body tangled and mixed in the process of collecting and connecting the stories about women’s bodies. All in all, it is impactful and infinitely valuable to create a combined system that can ensure the freedom of expression of mine meanwhile reflecting the social norms that are placed on by society. As a system that could contain elements that collide and conflict with each other in a holistic manner, it is expected that it would be developed into a system that could demonstrate multiple social issues, which is difficult to mention officially in daily life, in a diverse, complex and indirect way.
