Abstract
This study began with the purpose of exploring the aspect of the ‘Uncanny’, a psychoanalytic concept of Sigmund Freud, that appears in the art work of Max Ernst's. Max Ernst, the leading surrealist, still holds the importance of study in that it is still attracting attention globally. After contemplating how Ernst's work expresses the psychological factors of the artist and the methodology that can analyze them, this study adopted Freud's psychoanalysis which can explain the psychological factors of the writer involved in the work of art. According to Freudian psychoanalysis, the‘Uncanny’ is eerie that occurs after the repressed event repeats itself, although once familiar. This study assumes that the concept of Freudian ‘Uncanny’ as a tool that can effectively analyze the visual aspects and individual psychological aspect, which are returning repeatedly, and focuses on how the ‘Uncanny’ appears in Ernst's art work. Freud traces the meaning of uncanny's original German word ‘Unheimliche’ and its semantic word ‘Heimliche.’ So he reveals that ‘Heimliche’ has changed its meaning and became ‘Unheimriche’. He says that this kind of change in meaning has occurred because of the suppression of ‘Heimlichie’. Next, Freud points out that the main character's fear of loss of eyeballs is the same as fear of castration in the novel “Der Sandmann”. Through this, he insists that uncanny would include a mother’s womb as a place where humans were most familiar before. Meanwhile, there are mechanisms for uncanny. Those are repression and trauma, death drive and repetition compulsion. Repression is a kind of defense devices that unconsciously pass experiences and incidents that cause discomfort in protecting the self, and it is traumatized to be repressed. However, the trauma never disappears and repeatedly appears, driven by the death drive, which tends to return to death as the most comfortable state of human. Uncanny aspects, including repression and trauma, death drive and repetition compulsion are revealed in Ernst's image of frottage, collage-novel and Loplop. Frottage, a technique discovered by Ernst, can be interpreted as a symptom of trauma and also uncanny technique showing trauma compulsively and repeatedly. In the collage-novel, those belonging to repressed past production styles are recreated in a form that is eerie and unfamiliar to the present. Images made from the obsolete not only indicate repressed things in historical terms but also things those are mentally repressed. The image of a coral reef-like hair and an ocean where death and rest coexist reminds us of the mother’s womb, which was once the most familiar but had to be repressed. The bird/man, Loplop, has two identities: a totem and his alter ego. Loplop as a totem which points to the taboo of the primal desire of humanity and Loplop as a double reminds of artist himself who is most familiar but have to overcome and death. In this way, the images of Loplop with repression and trauma appear repeatedly and arise uncanny. This work studies how Ernst's work represents the ‘Uncanny’, Freud's psychoanalytic concept, by examining the elements of repression, trauma, and repetitive compulsion that make up Ernst's work. It has meaning to look at the concept of ‘Uncanny’ as a useful framework for analyzing the trails of personal psychological trauma and repression that appear in the art work.
