Integrating Intensive reading and process-genre writing for young learners

Abstract

The aim of this thesis is to create a 4 skills textbook that consists of 10 units for young learners that integrates authentic reading and writing opportunities. 8 elementary school students aged from 8 to 10 are target learners and their English proficiency is level 3 developing according to WIDA Proficiency Guidelines. Intensive reading and genre-based writing were used as methods of this study. In this study, students analyzed a genre of news articles through strategic reading and process writing were followed as final tasks. It enabled young learners to learn about selected features of the news articles. The result of this study shows that young learners will be able to recognize and use language forms from the genre of news articles. Also, they will be able to increase writing skills by making their own original written assignments as final tasks.;본 논문의 목적은 아동 학습자를 위한 실제적 읽기 자료와 글쓰기 기회를 제공함으로써 4대 영역을 통합한 10 단원의 학습용 교재를 만드는 것이다. 초등학교에 다니는 8세부터 10세에 이르는 8명의 목표 학습자를 연구대상으로 설정하였으며, 그들의 영어 수준은 WIDA 기준에 따르면 레벨 3인 developing 단계에 해당된다. 본 연구에 사용된 방법론은 정독과 장르 기반 글쓰기이다. 특히, 본 연구에서는 학생들이 전략적 읽기를 통해 신문 기사 장르를 분석해보고, 과정 중심의 글쓰기를 최종 과제로 수행하였다. 이를 통해 학생들은 뉴스 기사의 특성에 대해서 배울 수 있었다. 본 연구의 결과, 1단원 수업 후 아동 학습자들은 뉴스 기사 장르에 사용되는 언어의 형태를 이해하고 이를 적절하게 사용할 수 있을 것으로 기대된다. 또한, 최종 과제로 직접 독창적인 글쓰기를 수행함으로써 쓰기 실력을 배양할 수 있을 것으로 기대된다.
