dc.description.abstract1. Introduction -Purpose : The purpose of this textbook is to improve English proficiency as a foreign language through an integration of Extensive Reading (ER) and Intensive Reading (IR) approaches. -Target Learners : The target learners are first-year university students in a College English Class at a Korean university. -Rationale : A combination of ER and IR methods will help learners to develop their reading comprehension skills while at the same time promoting positive attitudes toward language learning. -Proficiency : Intermediate-High according to the ACTFL 2. Method : -Extensive and Intensive Reading (ER and IR) -Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) -Task-Based Language Teaching (TBLT) Students will begin each part of the unit by doing before-reading activities and completing IR activities. IR activities will prepare students to allow them to develop effective reading strategies which will help them to engage in ER independently. Students will also practice speaking and writing during post-reading activities based on communicative and task-oriented activities in class, which will help them to improve their communicative competence. Furthermore, students will also have an opportunity to develop critical thinking skills and learn to engage in discussions and express their thoughts. 3. Expected outcomes : -Students will improve the four language skills by regarding reading books (speaking, listening, reading, writing) and developing ER and IR skills. -Students will acquire vocabulary in natural contexts. -Students will develop critical thinking skills and learn to express their thoughts in small group discussions.-
