Abstract
Purpose : Integrating TBLT, CLT, and ‘Focus on form’ to equip students to be English guides at Korean historical sites. Rationale : As an English teacher, I have tried to provide students with an authentic setting, such as going on a field trip to historical sites where many tourists visit. The reason why I chose to use these places was so that students could interview foreigners and practice their English speaking skills. This would not be possible if they were just inside the classroom. Most students think that learning grammar is to achieve scores in school. However, I wanted to make students realize that learning grammar can come to practical use. This portfolio is designed to add grammar to the CLT method so students can use correct expressions in the real world. This textbook seeks to integrate an authentic environment to help students improve their English proficiency while they are doing meaningful volunteer work for foreign visitors at a historic palace. The reason why I chose this theme was that these days middle school and high school students do volunteer work for tourists. In this text book, I want to illuminate for students on how they can volunteer at the historical sites and also practice their English in South Korea. Target learners: Middle school first graders Proficiency : Intermediate High (ACTFL) Method : TBLT, CLT, and ‘Focus on form’ is used as the main methods. Students will be motivated by the authentic topics. They will be guided to guess the target structures for meaningful communication. Students will gradually become familiar with the target expressions by being conducted tasks collaboratively inside a set task. The students’ comprehension can be checked through the speaking activities. Expected outcomes: Students are expected to naturally use their grammatical proficiency in the authentic setting. Students will understand characteristics of historical sites from Geunjeonjeong Hall in English through the activities. By becoming prepared as a volunteer with other students, they will be able to build up their speaking and listening skills. Students will be able to conversate with foreigners through real practice.
