한국 전통 자수의 조형적 특성을 활용한 실험 타이포그래피 연구

Abstract

Embroidery refers to a domain of the art that represents beautiful pictures, characters or patterns using various materials and tools including threads and needles. Oriental embroidery, in particular, represents an object elaborately and delicately, and even reflects the light and darkness including a shade of the object realistically. Korean traditional embroidery, which belongs to the Oriental embroidery, is an important cultural heritage that has been developed and passed down with its own characteristics according to the diversified regional conditions for long time. Korean traditional embroidery is characterized to represent a texture, the 3-dimensional and spatial senses of an object by the twist and thickness difference of threads based on the decorative and symbolic patterns, vivid colors and the concise and creative composition. Korean traditional embroidery entails a similarity to the functions of characters in that it has been utilized as a means to represent various wishes of people. The lettering examples that utilize the embroidery can be sought in the experimental typography domain in the modern times. In recent days, the lettering works, which compose characters by applying various embroidery techniques or freely represent objects by directly embroidering the characters, are being actively progressed mostly by designers in oversea. As the embroidery craft of French style is becoming popular, it is sometimes possible to find out the characters that were represented via embroidery in Korea as well, however most of them are a partial expression of Roman alphabets and the Korean characters are not hardly used. It is a fact, in particular, that the representation of characters using the traditional Korean embroidery has not been actively conducted. Under such a circumstance, we proceeded a research based on the judgment that the traditional embroidery, which entails a semantic similarity to the roles of characters and contains the beauty of Korean sculptures, can be a material that has a specific value and a potential for new trials of development in experimental typography. This study analyzed various techniques of Korean traditional embroidery and extracted the morphometric characteristics and elements to proceed a typography work. There are more than 80 techniques in Korean traditional embroidery, and among those, 20 techniques that are frequently used were summarized in this study. Afterwards, this study selected only two techniques that well demonstrate a formativeness of Korea and are appropriate to character expression. In terms of the embroidery technique, not only the principles of embroidery but also the morphometric characteristics of the subjects and patterns that are represented were extracted and used in the design of characters. The characters using Jaryeonsu technique were represented by embroidery lettering and those using Sollibsu technique were worked with the font development in mind so that they could be used in a digital environment in order to increase their usability. The developed typography was implemented as an experimental typography works consisting of lettering of words or sentences using graphic elements together. A new method for representing the characters using the traditional embroidery of Korea was explored through this study. The characters embroidered can be utilized not only in typography but entire domains of design and art, even further, it is possible for those to develop the creative and unique formative language. In addition, extracting the formative elements from embroidery, which is a traditional cultural resource of Korea, and developing them into characters can be one of methods that succeed to Korean traditions in modern society. It is anticipated that this study can help the research on experimental typography using the characteristics of embroidery as a tool for representing the characters and the experiment methodology in this study can be used in various applications in the future. In particular, it is hoped that this study is able to lead a new way for utilizing the Korean traditional embroidery and to extend the scope of materials for designing and representing the characters through sight, even further, to contribute to using the traditional aesthetics of Korea in a modern style. ;자수는 실과 바늘을 포함한 여러 가지 재료와 도구를 사용하여 바탕천 위에 아름다운 그림, 글자, 무늬 등을 나타내는 예술 분야이다. 동양 자수는 표현대상을 섬세하고 치밀하게 표현하고 명암과 음영까지 사실적으로 표현한다. 동양 자수에 속하는 한국 전통 자수는 오랜 시간 동안 시대와 지역의 다양한 조건에 따라 특징을 가지고 발달 되어 온 한국의 중요한 문화자료 중 하나이다. 장식적이고 상징적인 문양과 선명한 색채의 사용, 간결하고 창의적인 구도를 바탕으로 실의 꼬임과 굵기의 변화를 주어 사물의 질감과 입체감, 공간감을 표현한 것은 한국 전통 자수만의 특징이다. 또한, 한국 전통 자수는 아름다움만을 추구하던 것이 아니라 인간의 여러 가지 소망을 표현하는 수단으로 활용되었다는 점에서 문자의 기능과도 유사성을 찾을 수 있다. 현대의 실험 타이포그래피 분야에서 자수를 활용한 레터링 사례를 찾아볼 수 있다. 최근, 해외의 디자이너들을 중심으로 다양한 자수 기법을 응용하여 글자를 만들거나, 글자를 직접 수놓아 자유롭게 표현하는 레터링 작품이 활발하게 진행되고 있다. 한국에서도 프랑스 자수 공예가 유행하면서 자수로 표현된 글자를 종종 찾아볼 수 있지만, 대부분이 로만 알파벳의 부분적인 표현이며 한글은 거의 활용되지 않고 있다. 특히 한국의 전통 자수를 활용한 글자 표현이 적극적으로 이루어지지 않는 상황이다. 이러한 상황에서 문자의 역할과 의미적 유사성을 지니며 한국의 조형미가 담긴 전통 자수가 실험 타이포그래피 개발에 새로운 시도와 가능성이 있는 재료라고 판단하여 연구를 진행하였다. 본 논문에서는 한국 전통 자수의 다양한 기법을 분석하고 형태적 특징과 요소를 추출하여 타이포그래피 작품을 진행하였다. 한국 전통 자수 기법에는 80여 가지가 넘는 다양한 기법이 있으며, 그중에서 자주 사용되는 수법을 20가지로 정리하였다. 한국의 조형성이 잘 드러나면서 글자 표현에 적합한 수법으로 2가지를 선정하였다. 자수 기법은 수를 놓는 원리와 자수로 표현하는 대상과 문양의 형태적인 특징을 도출하여 글자디자인에 활용하였다. 자련수 기법을 활용한 글자는 자수 레터링으로 표현하고, 솔잎수 기법을 활용한 글자는 활용성을 높이고자 디지털 환경에서 사용할 수 있도록 폰트 개발을 염두에 두고 작업하였다. 개발한 타이포그래피는 단어나 문장의 레터링으로 구성된 실험 타이포그래피 작품으로 전개하였다. 본 연구를 통해 한국의 전통 자수를 활용한 새로운 글자 표현 방식을 모색하였다. 특히 직접 자수를 놓아 표현한 글자는 입체적인 질감을 가지는 글자이며, 기존의 글자보다 조형적인 재미를 찾을 수 있다. 글자가 가지는 시각적 이미지에 자수를 활용한 촉각을 더했을 때의 새로운 글자 표현 가능성을 제시하였다. 자수 글자의 응용 범위는 타이포그래피뿐 아니라 디자인과 예술 전 영역에서 활용할 수 있으며 창의적이고 독창적인 조형 언어로 발전시킬 수 있다. 또한, 한국 전통의 재료인 자수에서 조형적 요소를 도출하고 활용하여 글자로 발전시킨 점은 현대 사회에서 한국의 전통을 계승하는 하나의 방법이 될 수 있다. 본 연구가 글자 표현의 재료로서 자수의 특성을 활용한 실험 타이포그래피 연구에 도움이 되기를 바라며 본 논문에서의 실험 전개 방식이 향후 연구에서 다양하게 활용되기를 기대한다. 특히 한국 전통 자수를 활용하는 방법을 통해 글자를 디자인하고 표현할 수 있는 재료의 폭을 넓히고, 나아가 한국 전통의 미를 현대적으로 활용하는 것에 기여할 수 있기를 희망한다.
