향로의 조형미를 응용한 현대 향로 디자인 연구

Abstract

향(香)은 신성(神聖)과 인간을 연결하는 매개체이자 공간과 시간을 초월하는 유희로 여겨지며 삼국시대, 조선시대에 이르기까지 우리나라 역사 전반에 걸쳐 고유성을 지닌 문화로 자리 잡았다. 우리나라에서는 향이 발전 과정에서 불교와 긴밀하 게 결합하였으므로 향을 사르면 발생하는 항연(香煙)을 중심으로 향이 주는 정신적인 영향력에 대한 깊은 몰입이 특징적으로 나타난다. 향을 피우는 그릇인 향로(香爐)는 향연을 심미적으로 표현하는데 핵심적인 역할을 하는 향 도구로, 향과 연결된 감상을 조형적으로 표현한 물건이라고 할 수 있다. 본 연구는 우리나라에서 이어져온 향에 대한 문화적인 해석과 이를 반영한 향로의 조형적 미감을 응용하여, 현대 향 문화에 적합한 현대식 향로를 제안하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 향로의 조형적 미감을 이해하기 위해 먼저 문헌조사를 통해 용례와 형태적 특성에 따른 향로의 분류를 파악하였다. 이어 향로의 실제적인 조형미를 분석하고자 현존하는 우리나라의 향로 유물 436점 중에서 조형적 일관성을 띠는 유물을 분류하여, 향로 대표 조형 유형 8개를 추출하였다. 또 향로의 구성 요소 중 뚜껑, 몸체, 손잡이, 받침에 대한 요소별 향로의 조형을 추가적으로 분석하였다. 아울러 현대 향 시장의 동향과 제품 사례 및 사용성에 대한 조사를 진행하여 현대 소비자의 요구에 적합한 디자인을 제안하고자 하였다. 이에 향로 고유의 조형성을 중심으로, 창의적인 형태의 탐색, 기성품(Readymade) 유리의 활용, 조립이 가능한 구성의 디자인 원칙을 이용한 다양한 시도를 거쳐 기존 향로의 특성을 새롭게 해석하였다. 본 연구에서 진행된 일련의 과정들은 현대에서 일상화되지 않은 고유의 전통성이 차별성을 가진 제품으로 탄생하기 위한 하나의 방법론이라고 할 수 있다. 문화적 정체성을 현대에 적합하게 응용하는 시도 중 하나로서 본 연구가 추후 전통을 현 대화하는 데 실마리를 제공하길 기대한다.;Incense was regarded both as a medium connecting divinity to mankind, and as play transcending space-time. It was established as a unique culture in the whole history of Korea from the Three Kingdoms period through the Joseon Dynasty period. Since the Korean incense culture had been closely related to Buddhism, it features multifaceted engagement in spiritual influence through incense around its smoke. Incense burners, vessels created to burn incense in a solid form, has various shapes depending on method, purpose, and the usage situation of the incense. The shape of incense burner affects not only visual but olfactory appreciation by determining the expression of the incense burning smoke. Based on the formative interpretation of various forms of incense burners found throughout Korean history, this study aims to present a modern style burner matching the contemporary incense culture. To understand the formative aesthetics of incense burners, this study examines the classification of burners according to uses and shape characteristics through literature research. Among the 436 incense burners found in Korean history, eight representative formative types were derived. Further analysis was conducted on the shape of incense burners by component including a lid, body, handle and a support. Combining the formal analysis with the research on the trends and products of the modern incense market, the modern incense burner meeting needs of contemporary consumers was designed. Hence, with a focus on the unique formative characteristics of the burner, this study gives a new interpretation on the existing burners through a variety of attempts using the design principles including the exploration of creative forms, utilization of ready-made glass, and easy assembly. A series of processes conducted in this research may be regarded as a methodology for the tradition unfamiliar in the modern times to be born as a differentiated product. As one of attempts to apply the cultural identity to the modern age in a proper manner, this study is expected to provide a clue for modernizing the tradition.
