Abstract
As the nation is about to enter the stage of super-aged society, the importance of color utilization is growing based on the visual characteristics of the elderly in the public walking environment. Human cognitive functions intervene in the process of colors conveying the meanings of information, and they can promote positive effects on cognitive functions and emotional aspects. Some previous studies report that legibility and fatigue according to the density of black color of letters are independent measures to some degree. Others investigated differences in short-term memory according to color arrangements and demonstrated that color arrangements of similar colors contributed to greater short-term memory than those of widely different colors. Still others set a group of color guidelines for universal design to take the elderly into consideration, raising a need to abstain from the arrangement of similar colors whose differences were difficult to be recognized and the same colors and arguing that colors that the elderly had a difficult time distinguishing should not be used in important signs. Many studies are conducted on the cognitive effects of colors, but there is a shortage of research on the cognitive effects of color arrangements for the elderly. Providing walking information in a public environment, walking guidance signs are major parametric elements to offer the location information and directions of areas and facilities. Different departments work on walking guidance signs at the local government level with different criteria applied to the colors of writing elements on the signs among different agencies. Improvements should be made to increase the visibility and recognition of walking information by applying color arrangements to facilitate cognitive stimuli based on the weakened vision of the elderly. This study set out to investigate the legibility, fatigue, and recognition order of the elderly according to color arrangements, conducting an experiment based on previous studies. After analyzing the background colors of walking guidance signs current used by each local government, the investigator conducted a two-stage experiment on legibility, fatigue, and recognition order with N2, N3, and N5, which were multi-frequency, minimum, and maximum values respectively, as background colors and R, YR, Y, and GY colors, which the elderly could distinguish easily, as letter colors. The experiments results led to the following conclusions: first, colors of the Y group recorded high legibility. They recorded the highest legibility across all the eyesight groups, especially in the group of Vision 0.2~0.5; secondly, letter colors of the YR and Y groups recorded the lowest fatigue, and letter colors of the R group recorded high fatigue. Letter colors of the YR group recorded low fatigue in the background colors of N2 and N3, and those of the Y group did in the background color of N5. Letter colors of the Y group recorded the lowest fatigue across all the eyesight groups with some differences according to background colors; and finally, the letter color of 5Y 9/6 recorded the first recognition order across all the background colors. Colors of high brightness and middle chroma in the Y group recorded the first recognition order. The recognition order of color arrangements with the background color of N2 was high in an experiment with the same group of letter colors. Colors of middle chroma recorded the fastest recognition by the background color. When the overall background colors grew increasingly brighter, recognition happened fast in the arrangement of letter colors of low chroma. The study examined the recognition order in the same letter colors except for the R group and found that colors of the Y, YR and GY groups recorded higher recognition against colors of high chroma, that colors of the R group did against colors of high brightness and middle chroma, and that colors of the YR and Y group did against colors of high brightness and high chroma. These findings show that colors of high legibility also recorded the highest recognition order, which indicates that legibility has impacts on recognition. Letter colors of low fatigue and those of high legibility showed a similar scope with differences in outcome values under the influence of background colors, which suggests that they are independent elements to certain degree. Letter colors of high brightness and middle chroma recorded the highest recognition order against darker background colors. Colors of middle chroma recorded the fastest recognition against the background colors, but letter colors of low chroma recorded fast recognition against overall brighter background colors. As for the recognition order in the same letter color groups, the recognition order was higher in colors of high chroma in the Y, YR and GY groups except for the R group, which indicates that outcome values vary according to the objects of comparison. The findings of the study can serve as basic data to improve the recognition of public walking information among the elderly.
