멤피스(Memphis) 디자인에 나타나는 색채특성 연구

Abstract

현대 사회에서 인간의 감성과 욕구를 자극하는 색채의 힘은 확대되고 있다. 과거 물질 중심주의 환경에서 정신적 교류와 커뮤니케이션이 중요한 요소로 대두되고 있으며 휴머니즘과 커뮤니케이션이 활성화되는 표현요소가 디자인 분야에서 지속적으로 요구되고 있다. 이는 디자인을 통해 인간에게 감정을 이끌어내는 감성(sensibility) 색채계획이 매우 중요한 요소라는 의미이다. 미니멀리즘 이후 색채에 대한 중요도는 매우 높아지고 있고 최근 1980년대의 문화가 유행을 하는 뉴트로(Newtro)가 주요 트렌드로 자리 잡은 시점에서 소비자들은 더욱더 과감하고 개성있는 색채를 선호하고 있다. 포스트 모더니즘의 대표적인 디자인 사조인 멤피스 디자인은 모더니즘에 대한 획일화, 기계화에 대한 반발로 소비자와 소통하고 인간의 감성을 자극하는 디자인을 위해 다양한 실험을 한 1980년대 이탈리아 디자인그룹이다. 특히 멤피스 디자인의 특성은 형태, 재료, 패턴, 색채 등에서 매우 실험적이고 자유로운 새로운 방식을 보여주었고 그들이 사용한 색채는 최근에 다양한 산업 디자인 분야에서 멤피스 스타일로 등장을 하고 있다. 그러나 멤피스 그룹의 색채에 대한 정확한 분석 연구는 없었기 때문에 멤피스 디자인에 나타나는 색채특성을 분석하는 것이 본 연구의 목적이다. 색채에 대한 사용의 변화는 현대 디자인 문화사적으로 매우 의미가 있고 색채를 통해 다양한 디자인 분야에서 차용된 사례가 많은 멤피스 디자인의 대표 배색 팔레트를 제안하였다. 연구의 과정과 결과는 다음과 같다. 본 연구에서는 이론 연구와 선행연구를 통하여 포스트모더니즘의 발생과 철학적 이해를 바탕으로 모더니즘의 한계를 극복하기 위한 현대 디자인의 흐름과 연계성을 살펴보았고 이를 바탕으로 현재 멤피스 디자인의 영향과 색채 중심의 디자인 특성을 살펴보았다. 멤피스 그룹의 가구디자인 작품 31점을 선정한 뒤 가구별로 구분하고 NCS를 통해 색채정보를 분석하였고 단색과 배색, 배색조화에 대해 표로 제시하였다. 다음으로 디자이너별로 색채특성과 대표 배색 팔레트를 제시하였다. 연구 결과 멤피스 디자인 가구의 대부분은 색상대비가 사용되었고 4색 배색이 가장 많았고 주로 7~10색 멀티배색의 비율이 높았고 강조 배색과 분리 배색이 대다수였다. 주로 YR, RB 와 B, G계열의 색상대비가 많이 사용되었고 특히 Red에 가까운 YR 색상에서는 고채도의 사용이 많았고 RB의 경우 고명도의 사용이 많이 보이는 특징으로 분석되었다. 배색 분석결과 색상대비 중심의 색채계획을 하면서 명도, 채도를 다양하게 배치하는 강조 배색과 분리 배색을 보여주고 있었다. 이러한 연구결과는 현재 유행하고 있는 뉴트로(Newtro) 색채와 매우 유사한 특성이 있기 떄문에 이에 대한 후속 연구가 진행되어야 할 것이다.;In modern society, the power of color to stimulate human sensibility and desire is expanding. Mental exchange and communication have come up as important elements from the past materialism environment, and expression elements that promote humanism and communication are continuously required in the design field. This means that sensibility color planning is very important to elicit human emotions through design. Since minimalism, the importance of color has been increasing significantly, and consumers prefer more bold and unique colors due to the rise of Newtro trend where the popular culture trend of the 1980 returns. Memphis design, a representative design trend of post-modernism, was an Italian design group founded in 1981. The group conducted various experiments for design that communicates with people and stimulates human sensibility as a reaction against the uniformity and mechanization of modernism. In particular, characteristics of the Group's design include an experimental and unconventional way in forms, materials, patterns, colors, etc., and the colors they used have recently appeared as the Memphis Style in a variety of industrial design fields. However, the purpose of this study is to analyze the color characteristics of Memphis design because there was no exact analysis of the Memphis group’s color. The change in the use of color is very meaningful in the history of modern design culture, and this study proposed a representative color palette of Memphis design which has been adopted a lot by various design fields through color. The process and results of the study are as follows.This study looked into the flow and connection of modern design to overcome the limitations of modernism based on the occurrence of postmodernism and philosophical understanding through theoretical research and precedent research. Based on this, it examined the current effect of Memphis design and color-centered design characteristics. After selecting 31 pieces of Memphis Group's furniture design works, this study classified them by furniture, analyzed color information through NCS, and then presented a table of solid colors, color combinations, and color harmony. Next, it suggested color characteristics and representative color palettes for each designer.This study has found that most of the Memphis design furniture used color contrast, with the most 4 colors combinations. The proportion of 7-10 multiple colors combinations was high, as well as accent colors and separation colors. The color contrast of YR, RB, B, and G color groups was mainly used, featuring high saturation in YR color group close to Red and high brightness in RB color group. As a result of color scheme analysis, their color planning focused on color contrast while having the combinations of accent and separation colors with various arrangements of brightness and saturation. Since these findings show very similar characteristics to the colors of current Newtro trend, it needs to conduct a follow-up study.
