Abstract
Gabriel Fauré (1845-1924), one of the leading composers during the French Post-Romantic period in the 19th-century, was one of the contributors who strived to find French classics with his teacher Camille Saint-Saëns. While France was in a chaotic situation after Franco-Prussian war, French composers established a Société Nationale de Musique in an effort to be independent from German music and to find their own French tradition by attempting cultural reform through music. The opera and operetta were considered to be the cause of the decline and deterioration of the musical world instrumental music, by contrast, was an absolute music which attracted numerous attention and became the stepping stone for improving French music. The religious practice of France followed the Roman Catholic Church liturgy which also had a profound effect on French music; the prime examples of which are the Gregorian chant and the church modes. The use of various modes and scales, which allowed French composers to go beyond their composition limits, was used as melody and harmony while drawing a constant modulation and creating colorful sound. Such technique has been established as a distinct technique used by French composers. Composed in 1876, is Fauré's early work embedded with classical sonata forms and the characteristics of French tradition. In addition, proper placement of ostinato, sequence, pedal points, chromatic scales etc. creates colorful and rich sounds. Fauré's breakthrough attempts influenced Impressionism and many French composers, leading to the development of French instrumental music.
