20세기 여성 작곡가의 피아노 작품 연구

Abstract

본 논문은 소피아 구바이둘리나(Sofia Gubaidulina, b.1931)의 피아노 작품 <샤콘느>(Chaconne, 1962)를 중심으로 20세기 여성 작곡가의 피아노 작품과 여성의 음악 활동을 살펴보는 연구이다. 이는 20세기 여성 작곡가의 피아노 작품을 재조명하여 남성 편향적인 음악사를 보충하기 위한 목적이자 20세기에도 여전히 여성에게는 차별과 불평등이 존재했음을 드러내고자 함이다. 20세기에 펼쳐진 ‘여성 운동’은 여성의 억압된 삶과 활동, 그리고 그들의 경험에 대한 관심을 불러일으켰다. 여성은 남성과 동등한 권리를 찾기 위해 투쟁했고, 음악 활동에 있어서도 여성의 위치를 전복시키려는 여러 가지 시도가 계속되었다. 20세기의 여성들은 그들을 억압하고 있던 유리 천장을 깨며 자신의 영역에서 입지를 단단히 굳히기 시작한 것이다. 그러나 여성에 대한 차별과 불평등이 완전히 사라진 것은 아니었으므로 여성 음악가들의 활동에는 제약이 따랐다. 20세기 피아노 음악에 있어서 여성 작곡가의 작품에 관한 연구는 소수로 진행되고 있고, 연주되고 있는 작품 또한 극히 일부이다. 이는 여성 작곡가들이 출판에 어려움을 겪어 악보가 잘 보존되지 않았고, 여성 작곡가의 곡이라는 이유로 과소평가되어 주목받는 데 어려움이 있었기 때문이다. 이러한 시대적 배경 속에서 피아노 음악을 전개시킨 20세기의 여성 작곡가는 대표적으로 제르맹 타유페르(Germaine Tailleferre, 1892-1983), 그라지나 바체비치(Grażyna Bacewicz, 1909-1969), 그리고 소피아 구바이둘리나(Sofia Gubaidulina, b.1931)가 있었다. 프랑스의 제르맹 타유페르는 ‘프랑스 6인조’ 중 유일한 여성 작곡가로, 작곡 활동 초기부터 말기까지 꾸준히 피아노 작품을 작곡하여 30여 곡에 이르는 피아노 작품들을 탄생시켰다. 그의 피아노 음악은 간결하고 살롱 음악 분위기의 우아함이 나타나는 것이 특징이며 대부분 성격적 소품들로 이루어져 있다. 폴란드의 그라지나 바체비치는 제2차 세계대전 속에서 작곡 활동의 어려움을 겪었으나 자국의 전통적 요소를 현대적 기법과 연결시켜 소나타, 변주곡, 스케르초, 에튀드 등 다양한 양식의 작품들을 작곡했다. 그러나 <피아노 소나타 제2번>(Piano Sonata No.2, 1953)을 제외하고 그의 피아노 음악은 잘 알려져 있지 않은 편이다. 러시아의 소피아 구바이둘리나는 ‘영성의 작곡가’라 불리며 최근까지 활발한 작곡 활동을 전개하고 있다. 피아노 작품은 작곡 활동 초기에 작곡되었고, 전통적인 장르가 사용된 <샤콘느>(Chaconne, 1962), <인벤션>(Invention, 1974) 등을 비롯하여 새로운 주법이 활용된 <피아노 소나타>(Piano Sonata, 1965), 어린이를 위한 작품인 <음악적 장난감>(Musical Toys, 1969) 등이 있다. 그중 <샤콘느>는 그의 초기 작품임에도 완성도가 높고, 전통적인 양식 위에 독자적인 음악 어법과 20세기 음악의 소재가 결합되어 새로운 샤콘느의 경향을 보여주는 작품이라 할 수 있다. 또한, 높은 서정성과 강한 표현력, 그리고 청중이 이해할 수 있을 정도의 현대적 요소를 내포하고 있어 연주용으로 적합할 뿐만 아니라 다양한 테크닉과 새로운 음향 등을 탐구할 수 있어 교육용으로도 적합한 작품이다. 본 논문에서는 먼저 20세기 여성의 음악 활동을 살펴보며 여성 독주자, 성악가, 오케스트라, 지휘자, 작곡가의 위치와 그들에게 존재했던 차별에 대해 고찰하였다. 그리고 제르맹 타유페르, 그라지나 바체비치, 소피아 구바이둘리나의 생애와 피아노 독주 작품을 정리하였고, 대표적으로 구바이둘리나의 <샤콘느>를 분석하였다. 작품에 나타난 전통적인 요소와 20세기 음악의 소재, 그리고 구바이둘리나의 독자적인 음악 어법을 중심으로 살펴보았으며, 음향 해석과 운지법, 페달 등의 연주법을 제안하여 이 곡을 연주할 피아노 연주자에게 실질적인 도움을 주고자 하였다. 이번 연구를 통해 여성 작곡가의 피아노 음악 연구 활성화에 기여하고, 그들의 작품이 재조명됨으로써 여러 피아노 연주자들에게 연주될 수 있는 계기가 마련되기를 바란다.;This study examines the piano works of the 20th century female composers and their musical activities, focusing on the piano work, <Chaconne>(1962), by Sofia Gubaidulina(b.1931). This aims to complement the male biased music history by re-examining the piano work of a female composer of the 20th century and to reveal that discrimination and inequality that still existed in the 20th century. The “feminist movement” in the 20th century aroused interest in women's oppressed lives and activities including their experiences. Women have struggled to find equal rights with men, and several attempts to overthrow their positions in music activities continued. Women in the 20th century broke the glass ceiling that had been oppressing them and began to solidify their position in their realm. However, since discrimination and inequality against women did not yet completely disappear, there were restrictions on the activities of female musicians. In terms of the 20th century piano music, the research on female composers' works has been conducted in a small number, and only a few pieces are being performed. This is due to the fact that the female composers had difficulty in publishing, and the score was not well-preserved. Since the pieces written by female composers were underestimated, it was even difficult to receive the public attention. The representative female composers of the 20th century who developed piano music during this period are Germaine Tailleferre(1892-1983), Grażyna Bacewicz(1909-1969), and Sofia Gubaidulina(b.1931). Germaine Tailleferre from France is the only female composer of the French ‘Les Six', and has continually composed piano pieces from the beginning to the end of her writing career, producing over 30 piano pieces. Her piano music is characterized by the simplicity and elegance of the salon music atmosphere and is mostly made up of personality props. Grażyna Bacewicz from Poland experienced difficulties in composition during the World War II, but composed various styles of works, including sonatas, variations, scherzos, and etudes, by connecting the traditional elements with modern techniques. However, her piano music is not well known except for <Piano Sonata No. 2>(1953). Sofia Gubaidulina from Russia is called the “Spiritual Composer” and has been active in composition until recently. Her piano pieces were composed early in her composing career, which include <Chaconne>(1962) and <Invention>(1974), using traditional genres, and <Piano Sonata>(1965) and <Musical Toys>(1969) for children, using new methods. Among them, <Chaconne> is well-made despite her early work, and it is a work that shows the trend of new Chaconne by combining its independent music phrases and materials of the 20th century music over the traditional styles. In addition, it implies high lyricism, strong expression, and modern elements that can be understood by the audience, making it suitable for performance and educational use as it allows us to explore various techniques and new sounds. By looking at the musical activities of women in the 20th century, this study examines the positions of the female soloists, conductors, orchestras, vocalists, and composers and the discrimination that existed in them. In addition, the lives and piano solo works of Germaine Tailleferre, Grażyna Bacewicz, and Sofia Gubaidulina are summarized, and <Chaconne> by Gubaidulina is analyzed. The work is examined focusing on the traditional elements, the materials of the 20th century music, and Gubaidulina's own musical phrases, and techniques such as pedals are suggested in order to help the performers who would play this piece. Through this study, I hope to contribute to the activation of the research on the piano works by female composers, and that their works can be played by various piano players.
