Abstract
Kim Seung Ok is a representative writer in 1960s, and the study about him becomes a meaningful work as a solution of 1960s literature as well as one of person's work world. This study reviewed the change process of 'self world' which the characters of Kim seung Ok's novel pursue. This study will shed a light on Kim seung Ok's novel based on Jacques Lacan's theory. Lacan's psychoanalysis is to reinterpret Freud and urge subjectivation using philosophical, multidisciplinary and linguistic knowledge into an independent paradigm of culture and science, not just another branch of contemporary psychoanalysis. Studying the identity and change process of ‘self world' which the characters in Kim Seung Ok's work pursue is reviewing the universality and peculiarity of Kim Seung Ok's novel, as we considers all men persue is ‘self world’, ‘self world' is the object which characters desire and its substance is 'money' and 'sex' which capitalized society needs. Characters are obtaining them through others. Kim Seung Ok's novels can be understood as the 'contrast of self–desire and every day life desire'. This is not a conflict between two characters but a conflict of two different desires in on e character. And these desires cannot be achieved by discarding the other. The character lives in the reality which is not impossible to think a self escaped from the every day life and he comes to lose the meaning of the existence by being prisoned in the every day life if he gives up a try to search for it. In his novel, the reason for the loss of 'big object' that starts the symptom of 'longing' and the existence method of the principal agent facing the loss are well formed and revealed. Thus, through the psychoanalytic interpretation of Lacan about human, this study interprets how the loss of objects(The Real) that Freud called human's first symptom is operated on the lack(The Symbolic) and the fantasy(The Imaginary) in the psychologic reality, and how it stabilizes as the principal agent through Kim Seung Ok's novel. This thesis adopts the theory of unconscious desire by Jacques Lacan, and analyzes 'Kim Seung Ok's novel' in relation to the flow of Lacan's imaginary, symbolic and real orders. His theories are particularly useful in inspecting meanings perceived by a subject and its inner mind, covering aspects that were widely neglected in general appreciation of 'Kim Seung Ok's novel'. Here the concept of a subject is a medium that combines 'impulse' of one's desire and irrational 'illusion' isolated in the inside. The stronger the subject's desire becomes, the harder it is to fulfill them. When a desire is fulfilled, another desire emerges. The Kim Seung Ok's characters contain blind and unrealistic illusions. Persons of strong desire who pursues 'self world' appear repeatedly in second period. The characters of 「Dry(乾)」, 「Fantasy Diary」 and 「Life Practicing」 grow as they are aware of 'sex'. They go from imagination world to symbol world by imitating the adults' world, and construct 'self world' with it. Vicious vision shown in internal consciousness of characters in 「To understand my Sister」, 「A Goat is Strong」 are caused by such a negative "own world" each character has. As a result, it developed into disillusionment about contradictions in real world. The characters goes in orderly symbol world by the power of 'money' which the society of capitalism needs. The characters shows their appearance compromising with the reality of symbol world to adapt to the society of law, order, and rule. Persons who recognize the limitation of 'self world' wander lonely and identify their existence in third period. 「Mujin Traveller's Journal」 suggests the character who is shamed of his life pursuing 'money' but returns to such a real world, and 「Buying Bargains」, 「Night Traveling(夜行)」, 「Prolificity」 shows the scene that man is sold by 'money'. 'Self world' shakes by the money in this spot. The characters who exist in symbol world desire the return to imagination world again. The abundance which Mujin and night street impart wraps the characters like mother's womb. The characters love with the other sex and enjoy the abundance fully there, but actually, abandon their love and turn round shamefully. The act characters identify their age works as doubtful sigh to check what they have pursue is really correct life, at the same time it is identification for their existence. The life of the lower middle class who accepts the social phenomenon of high growth uncritically as 'self world' is dissolved is described nakedly in fourth period. 「A Cup of Tea」 and 「A Picnic」 show the phenomenon that the person is alienated in structural society, and 「Nocturnal Travel(夜行)」, 「Method of 1960s」, and 「Moonlight of Seoul Chapter 0」, 「Seoul, Winter in 1964」, 「Strong Man(力士)」, 「The Summer I Stole」 expose the snobbery of capitalism society more clearly through the characters' life state throwing away even their 'sex' for 'money' bravely. In Kim's novels, each subject has his "own world," or self-identity, which is by no means ideal. The world of the subject was created by accepting the denial of the reality and of others, and this meant they had to deny their own selves. Such artificial and oppressive method led each individual to a painful, insecure and confusing world of his own. However, the significance of the subject who finally discovered his own world cannot be dismissed. For one thing, the subject is "other self" that did not run away from the reality, but continuously attempted to interact and converse with the reality in order to be in control of his life. Another reason why the subject is significant despite the shortcomings is that he views others as equal subjects, and understands that individualistic perception that "I" exists only through critical self-consciousness and discipline.
