Abstract
;English has been used as a global language and the ability to have a fluent command of English is essential in the era of globalization. In particular, the chances of communicating with people in other countries by the Internet, SNS, smartphone, and e-mail have increased because of the 4th industrial revolution. Therefore, the importance of reading and writing ability has been emphasized besides listening and speaking ability. However, Korean education still lays emphasis on improving reading ability, aiming for scoring high on Korean SAT. Under this circumstance, the Education Ministry encourages secondary schools to involve descriptive and essay type questions in achievement assessment, but those questions have a tendency to evaluate comprehension of grammar through a sentence. In addition, writing activities in textbooks are even skipped because lots of time and efforts are needed. Thus, majorities of students in Korea do not have an opportunity to learn writing skills, and their writing skills tend to fall behind the other skills. Also, students are not interested in writing in English in the situation focused on the Korean SAT. Therefore, it is necessary for students to perform reading-writing activities using new learning method to express individuals’ opinion freely through evenly developed four skills of English. The purpose of the study is to investigate the effects of project-based learning using English newspaper on high school students’ reading, writing and affective domains. The study was conducted for seven regular classes at a men’s high school in Daejeon, Korea. The participants were sixty-five EFL Korean high school students in first grade. They were randomly divided into two groups – control group and experimental group. As a pretest, all students performed a reading test, an essay typed writing test and a questionnaire about their basic information and affective domains – interest, confidence, motivation - about reading and writing. In each experimental class, students in experimental group performed project-based learning using English newspaper article published in Korea. In the introduction step of the class, they learned new vocabulary used in each article, and in the next step they individually read the text, which was followed by comprehension questions. Then, they wrote a short essay whose topic was related to the text. Students, in groups of four or five, decided the topic of a project and produced an end product. On the other hand, students in control group performed reading and writing activities using a textbook. After five periods of experiment, every student performed a reading and writing test as a post test and a post questionnaire. In addition, in-depth questionnaire was performed only by the participants in the experimental group. Results from reading test were analyzed in three different criteria, which are bottom-up reading, top-down reading, and indirect writing. Writing tests were assessed by holistic and analytic evaluation. Analytic evaluation has four criteria, which are completion of task, content, organization, and language use. The findings of this study are as follows. First, students’ scores in experimental group increased in all criteria of the post-reading test, but there was a statistical improvement only in indirect writing in comparison with control group. Second, the students’ scores increased in the post-writing test; the score differences between pre- and post-writing test showed a statistically improvement in all criteria of writing evaluation. Compared to the scores of control group, students in experimental group statistically improved in all the criteria except for language use. Third, the score differences between pre- and post-questionnaire about affective domains in reading showed a statistical improvement, while a statistically significant improvement appeared only in motivation in reading in comparison with control group. Fourth, students in experimental group showed improved score in every affective domain in writing, while the score differences between control and experimental group showed a statistical improvement only in interest, confidence in writing. Fifth, overall students were satisfied with project-based learning method using English newspaper based on in-depth questionnaire. They responded that they had a hard time in writing their opinion in English because it was unfamiliar, but they could develop their reading and writing ability through new learning method. Also, they responded that they are willing to join the class which performs project-based learning. The result of this study demonstrated that project-based learning using English newspaper can be useful in developing both reading and writing ability by providing authentic material, which can be followed by writing one’s opinion related to the topic. Students will be motivated by student-centered cooperative activities and the procedure in producing an end product. Therefore, project-based learning using English newspaper will be the alternative method of traditional teaching method.
