- Abstract
- Since reinforced concrete (RC) structures are widely used due to its well-known thermal resistant, studies of fire damaged concrete structures have been limitedly conducted. Especially, high strength concrete (HSC) has additional degradation due to its disadvantages such as spalling. Column and wall play an important role in high-rise residential buildings with the wall structure system. Under fire, wall and column surfaces are commonly damaged partially and inconstantly due to fire condition and floor plan. Therefore, it is necessary to evaluate the thermal and structural behaviors of walls and columns under and after fire depending on heated area as well as other variable.
In this study, variations in the thermal and structural behavior of walls were investigated according to the and the heated area, fire exposure time and compressive strength of the concrete. To this end, fire and axial loading tests were performed to obtain the temperature distributions and residual strengths. Heat was applied to the walls according to the ISO 834 standard time–temperature curve for 1 or 2 h. The fire test results demonstrated significant dependence of the heat propagation through the wall along the thickness of the moisture clog formed during heating. In order to prove the effect of moisture clog on the heat propagation, heat transfer analyses were performed. The analytical results showed that the finite element (FE) model can predict heat propagation for the wall under fire accurately when the moisture clog zone is appropriately modeled. The results of the axial loading tests also indicated that the structural behaviors of the fire damaged walls were affected by the fire exposure time, concrete strength, and heated area. In particular, the wall heated on the single face showed eccentricity, which reduced the residual strength considerably. Structural analyses of the walls were also conducted to propose the reduced section method and investigate the effect of eccentricity.
In addition, the structural behavior of fire damaged walls under cyclic loading was experimentally and analytically investigated based on heated area and design parameters. Toward this goal, walls were exposed to the ISO 834 standard time-temperature curve for 2 h. After cooling for a week, cyclic loading was applied to the fire-damaged walls. Based on the tests, the temperature distribution, maximum lateral load, stiffness, ductility, and energy dissipation of the tested specimens were obtained. The test results showed that fire exposure significantly reduced the cyclic performance of the RC wall. In addition, the test variables influenced maximum lateral loads, stiffness, and ductility of the fire damaged walls. However, there was no significant difference in temperature distribution and energy dissipation among the specimens depending on failure mode and aspect ratio. In particular, the structural behaviors of the specimens designed to be weak at flexure were similar even though the heated area of the walls heated on single face were twice larger than walls heated only on half face.
In case of columns, the temperature distribution and structural behavior were experimentally and analytically investigated depending on heated area. Fire and residual strength tests were performed to measure the temperature and residual strength of columns. Also, temperature and structural analyses were conducted using a commercial software ABAQUS 6.3-10 and the results of analyses were validated by comparing to those obtained experimentally. The test results showed that residual strengths of columns having asymmetric heating were influenced by eccentricity, resulting in additional reduction in residual strength, but not as large as the wall heated on single face. In addition, the reduced section method could predict the residual strength of the column.
Finally, the structural behavior of high-rise residential building with the wall bearing system after fire was predicted using the analytical method of columns and walls validated in the previous chapter. Toward the goal, three-dimensional model of the compartment was generated for thermal and structural analyses using commercial software ABAQUS ver. 6.10-3. And then, the stiffness of column and walls obtained from the structural analysis of compartment was applied to the structural members of the high-rise residential building using commercial software Midas/Gen 2019. As results of high-rise residential building, the story drift and mode shape were slightly affected by fire exposure. However, the force and moment of columns and walls on the fire damaged floor and surrounding floors significantly changed after fire.
