In spite of having an overriding number of female students at higher (both upper secondary and tertiary) education, constant female unemployment which remains in between 60 – 70 percent for more than two decades has been both economic as well gender issue in Sri Lanka. Against the findings of the contemporary literature on the same subject i.e. social and cultural factors including marriage, childbearing, family decisions etc., findings of this study revealed that economic structure of the country and labor market dynamics including the quality of the jobs available at the labor market are vital to reduce female labor force participation in Sri Lanka. Thus, women’s attitude towards a better job followed by their preference to work at the public sector occupations have further contributed to decrease female labor force participation of the country. This research adopted a qualitative method and used both empirical and secondary data for the analysis. Based on its findings, it is concluded that education itself cannot enhance female labor force participation unless if the labor market provide better job opportunities for women that suits their level of education. This research further suggests affirmative actions with durable solutions are required to address this issue.;스리랑카의 고등(중등 및 제3차) 교육에서 여학생의 수가 압도적으로 많음에도 불구하고 20년 이상 여성 실업률이 60~70%에 머물러 있는 현상은 성 평등 차원에서의 문제일 뿐 아니라 경제적인 문제이기도 하다.
