미술 제도에 의한 단색화 가치형성과 시장의 기능 연구

Abstract

본 연구는 최근 단색화가 재부상하면서 다양한 미술 제도를 통해 단색화가 가치를 형성해가는 양상과 이어 작품가격이 급등한 현상에 주목하여 단색화의 가치와 작품가격 간의 상관관계를 규명하는 것을 목표로 한다. 1970년대에 태동한 단색화는 40여 년이 지난 오늘날 미술시장의 주도로 미술계에 다시 재견인되었다. 세계적인 관심 속에서 단색화 작품의 가치는 더욱 높아졌는데 이것은 자본의 논리로 움직이는 미술계의 시스템에 기인하여 주조된 현상이라고 추정해 볼 수 있다. 따라서 본 고에서는 2010년대 단색화 재부상 시기를 중심으로 미술 제도를 기반으로 단색화의 가치가 강화되는 방식과 작품가격 형성 요인을 고찰하고 미술시장의 작품가격 변동을 분석하였다. 단색화의 가치가 형성되는 과정을 살펴보기 위해 미술 제도를 크게 전시, 비평과 연구, 미술시장 영역으로 구분하여 단색화 붐을 촉발한 개연성 있는 사건 간의 관계와 그 결과를 심층적으로 다루었다. 우선 미술관이나 비엔날레와 같은 다양한 형태의 국내외 전시를 통해 단색화 작가와 작품을 조명하며 단색화의 위상이 재정립된다. 따라서 단색화 작가는 인지도와 명성이 높아지고 미술관에서 다루어진 단색화 작품들은 고부가가치의 상품이 되어 미술시장에 유통되면서 작품가격 역시 상승한다. 비평과 학술연구는 다양한 단색화의 담론을 형성하고 이론을 확립한다는 점에서 미술계의 이목을 집중시키고 재평가된 단색화의 명분을 마련하는 데 크게 이바지했다. 이처럼 단색화 전시 및 비평연구 그리고 시장의 적극적인 프로모션은 미술계 내에서 상당한 시너지 효과를 불러일으켰다. 박서보, 정상화, 윤형근을 필두로 한 단색화 작품들은 2014년을 시작으로 단기간 내에 작품가격이 급등한다. 단색화 주요작품의 2015년도 거래총액은 2013년 대비 14배나 증가하였고, 미술시장은 단색화에 힘입어 2014년부터 2017년 사이에 호황을 누리게 된다. 그리고 시장에서 단색화 작품의 가격 상승으로 작용한 외부 요인이 무엇인지 확인하기 위하여 단색화 작품의 100호 기준 평균값을 지수화하여 가격 변화를 추적해보았다. 대상 작가로는 시장에서 높은 거래가격이나 가격 상승률로 부각 된 이우환, 박서보, 정상화, 윤형근 등 네 명을 선정하였고 단색화 작가별 가격 변화를 살펴보았다. 박서보, 정상화, 윤형근 등 단색화 작가의 가격지수 움직임은 미술계 동향과 여러 사건 간의 연관성이 있다는 점을 확인할 수 있었다. 하지만 기존에 가장 높은 가격에서 거래되던 이우환의 경우, 국내·외에서 다양한 전시와 비평, 연구가 진행되었는데도 불구하고 2010년대 초반 미술시장의 전반적인 침체와 위작논란 등이 겹치면서 단색화 작가 중 예외적으로 평균 거래가격이 상승하지 못하였으며 거래가격이 유지되는 선에 그쳤다. 이로써 미술시장의 경제적 흐름 내에서 미술계 전반의 협력은 특정 미술의 가치를 강화하고 작품가격 형성에도 영향을 미칠 수 있는 요인임을 확인할 수 있었다. 2010년대 진행된 단색화 전시, 담론의 생성, 시장 성과 등 국내외 미술계에서 적극적으로 수용된 단색화 재부상 사례들을 통해 후기 자본주의 체제에서의 문화 논리를 이해하고, 구분된 각 영역이 서로 미치는 작용 방식과 그 배경에 존재하는 자본의 역학관계를 확인할 수 있었다. 시장 논리로 작동하는 사회 시스템, 즉 미술 제도를 비판적으로 고찰하고 단색화 신드롬을 국제화의 성과로 해석하는 시장주의적인 관점에서 벗어나 단색화 열풍 현상을 관찰하고 객관적인 가격지수 자료로 미술시장에서 일어난 작품가격 변동 요인을 재검증하였다. 이러한 논의를 통해 사회 구조를 순환하면서 형성된 단색화의 가치를 비평적으로 바라볼 수 있는 확장된 시각을 제안한다는 점에서 본 연구의 의의가 있다.;This study aims to examine the correlation between the value of Dansaekhwa and its price especially by paying attention to the fact that recently Dansaekhwa has formed its value through circulating various art systems. Dansaekhwa, which had been first begun in the 1970s, was brought into the art world again mainly led by the art market suddenly in 40 years. With the global interest, the value of Dansaekhwa has increased and we can assume it as a result of the art system which is based on economic reasons. Therefore this study examines how the value of Dansaekhwa has been strengthened on the art system and the factors which influence the price, especially focusing on the period of Dansaekhwa re-emergence in the 2010s. And the dynamics of Dansaekhwa's price were also analyzed. To investigate the process of value formation of Dansaekhwa, we divide the art system into three parts of the exhibition, discourse, and market. The relationship between events that triggered the Dansaekhwa boom and the following results was also dealt with in-depth. First of all, the status of Dansaekhwa was re-established and shed light on artists and works through various forms of exhibitions such as art galleries and biennale globally. Thus as the recognition and reputation of Dansaekhwa artists have increased, the works dealt with in the art museum become high valued products and the art was distributed in the market at a high price. Criticism and academic research have contributed greatly to gathering the attention of the art world and made necessary reasons to reevaluating the Dannsaekhwa. It formed various discourses and established theories. The exhibitions, criticism, research and the promotion of the market generated significant synergy within the art world. Dansaekhwa works such as Seo-Bo Park, Sang-Hwa Jung, and Hyung-Geun Yoon had started to surge in price within a very short period starting in 2014. The total trading volume of major Dansaekhwa in 2015 was 14 times higher than in 2013. As a result, the art market enjoyed a boom during 2014 and 2017. To identify the external factors that contributed to the price of Dansaekhwa works, we traced the sales price by indexing it to the average value of the same scale. The four selected artists were U-fan Lee, Seo-bo Park, Sang-Hwa Jung and Hyung-Geun Yoon who were highlighted by the high transaction price. The price dynamics of Dansaekhwa artists were confirmed to be closely related to the important events in the art world. However, in the case of U-fan Lee, which had been traded at the highest price in the past, the price did not rise exceptionally well within the Dansaekhwa artists because of the overall downturn in the art market and counterfeiting problem which was overlapped in the early 2010s even though there were various exhibitions, criticisms, and researches. In this way, it was confirmed that cooperation among the art world within the economic flow of the art market can be a factor that can reinforce the value of specific art and influence the formation of a work price. We can understand the nature of culture in the post-capitalist system through the case of Dansaekhwa re-emergence. It was actively accepted in the art world in forms of exhibitions, discourse creation and market performances in the 2010s. We investigated how each of the systems works interactively based on their economic interests. With critical considering the social system that affects the market and being apart from perceiving the Dansaekhwa syndrome as a result of internationalization, we analyzed the Dansaekhwa boom phenomenon and the causes of the price fluctuations in the art market with price index data. This study is meaningful in a way that suggests an expanded view of critically looking at the value of Dansaekhwa which is formed by circulating the social structure.
