Abstract
;Parents with intellectual disabilities have a tendency to experience difficulties in raising their children and tend to have insufficient knowledge and skills required for parenting. Especially, for those whose children also have intellectual disabilities, their burden and stress are heightened. Despite the support for the mothers with intellectual disabilities needs to consider the individual characteristics of each mother, current programs are limited in that they are provided in a lump, such as lectures or counseling programs. The purpose of this action research is to investigate changes in interactions between mothers with intellectual disabilities and their children with disabilities when the parenting support program is implemented. Two families including mothers with intellectual disabilities who lived in downtown Seoul and raise children with intellectual disabilities attending elementary school(Grade 1-2) participated in this study. Based on the characteristics of those mothers and the needs of their family, which were identified through the pre-interview, a home-based parenting support program was developed. A total of 20 sessions were provided, 10 sessions of mother's education, and 10 sessions of performance feedback. At each session, the researchers communicated with mothers to share their dailies and collected their experiences in implementing parenting skills. A phenomenological method was used to understand the experiences of family members who participated in the program. This study used the data collected from interview, video, and field notes to analyze the results and came up with three main categories. The first theme was 'Show of the Family at the beginning of the program' to observed and analyzed the interactions between the families and their children, both before and a week after the program was started. The second topic was 'the life of a family like a roller coaster that emerged during the program,' which observed and analyzed how intellectual disability mothers were seen in the process of implementing a parenting support program. The third theme was 'Direction for change in the future', which were observed and analyzed the changes that family members experience after the end of the program and what homework is still left through the program. This action study provided an opportunity for mothers to recognized that they had to care for their children and to learn how to interact with their children with intellectual disabilities and how to teach them. In addition, the children with intellectual disabilities began to recognize the mother as playmate and made changes following her mother's instructions. The reasons for this effect were that the study identified the difficulties of each family and provided individualized support, the use of a structured learning approach to help mothers fully master parenting skills and apply them to emotional stress. Emotional support was provided to the mother who did not have a pool partner through the dialogue with the researcher, the fact that they were able to see the interactions between families through home visits, and the high participation. This study is meaningful in that mothers having intellectual disabilities who did not know the importance and the way to interact with their children who also have intellectual disabilities began to make positive changes in their interactions with their children through the experience of participating in this action study.
