애니메이션 <몬스터 주식회사>의 음악적 특징 연구

Abstract

본 논문은 애니메이션 <몬스터 주식회사(Monster Inc., 2001)>에 나타난 작곡가 랜디 뉴먼의 음악적 특징과 영상과 음악의 상관관계에 대한 연구이다. 애니메이션 <몬스터 주식회사>는 픽사 애니메이션 스튜디오의 애니메이터이자 스토리맨으로 활약했던 피트 닥터(Pete Hans Doctor, 1968-)가 감독을 맡은 데뷔작이자, 랜디 뉴먼(Randy Newman, 1943-)이 음악을 작곡한 작품으로 몬스터와 인간 어린이의 모험과 우정을 담은 애니메이션이다. 본 논문은 음악분석을 통해 애니메이션을 나타난 랜디 뉴먼의 음악적 어법과 경향을 파악하고 연구하고자 하였다. 이를 위해 우선적으로 랜디 뉴먼의 음악적 배경과 선행작품들을 살펴보았고, 애니메이션 제작사인 디즈니, 드림웍스, 픽사를 선정해 회사 별 작품 변천사와 음악적 특징에 대해 알아보았다. 이러한 선행연구를 토대로 <몬스터 주식회사>의 스토리 플롯구조에 맞추어 발단, 전개, 절정, 결말 4가지 단계로 나눈 뒤 각 단계에 쓰여진 음악을 분석하여 음악의 기능과 특징에 대해 알아보았다. 감독의 연출의도와 더불어 인물의 특성과 움직임, 극 중의 상황과 사건 그리고 인물의 감정변화와 작품이 전달하려는 메시지 등을 어떻게 파악하고 음악적으로 표현하였는지에 대해 알아보았으며 이를 통해 <몬스터 주식회사>에서 나타난 랜디 뉴먼의 음악적 특징과 그에 따른 음악과 영상의 상관관계를 연구하였다. 연구 결과, 본 애니메이션에서 음악은 거의 모든 상황에 존재하였으며 애니메이션이 갖는 감정전달의 한계를 음악이 보강하면서 중요한 요소로 사용되었고, 인물의 특성과, 분위기와 극 중의 상황 그리고 감정선 및 장면 효과를 극대화 시키는 요소로 본 영화에 자리잡고 있었다. 또한 오프닝에 독립적인 시그널 영상에 맞춰 만들어진 시그널 음악을 배치하였고, 엔딩크레딧에는 주요 인물인 몬스터 설리와 마이크가 부른 주제가 ‘If I Didn’t Have You’를 사용하여 극의 주요 주제인 우정에 대한 이야기를 가사로써 직접적으로 드러내고 있다. 스윙재즈의 장르적 특성을 이용해 몬스터들과 그들이 사는 세계를 재미있고 위트있는 분위기로 창출하였으며 등장인물 별로 다르게 주어진 악기군의 음색과 모티브를 사용해 인물의 특성을 묘사하였고 영상과 음악을 동기화하여 사용함으로써 장면의 효과를 극대화하였다. <몬스터 주식회사>에 나타난 랜디 뉴먼의 음악은 감독의 연출 의도에 맞춰 영상과 밀접하게 사용되었으며 등장인물들의 인물적 특성과 그들이 겪는 상황, 인물들의 감정선과 함께 애니메이션이 전달하고자 하는 메시지를 음악적으로 표현하여 관객에게 전달하고 있었다. 이러한 음악은 극 중의 몬스터와 비현실적인 몬스터 세계를 더욱 사실적으로 느껴지게 만들면서 애니메이션의 핵심적인 역할을 담당하고 있다. 본 논문의 연구를 통해 애니메이션의 음악 뿐 아니라, 앞으로 랜디 뉴먼과 픽사의 후속 작품에 대한 분석 연구를 하는 모든 이들에게 도움이 되길 바라는 바이다.;This purpose is a study of the musical characteristics of Randy Newman and the correlation between video and music, which appeared in <Monster, Inc. ,2001>. <Monster,Inc.> is a debut film directed by Pete Hans Doctor (1968-), who was an animator and story man at Pixar Animation Studios, and This animation is a work by Randy Newman who composed music. The film is an animation of monsters and human children's adventures and friendship. This purpose attempted to identify and study the musical usage and trends of Randy Newman, who showed animation through music analysis. To do this, I first reviewed Randy Newman's musical background and previous works, and selected animation producers Disney, DreamWorks, and Pixar to learn about the company's star productions and musical features. Based on this Prior research, we have divided the four stages of "Initiation, Development, Climatization, and Conclusion" into the "story plot" structure of Monster Corporation and by analyzing the music written in each stage, I learned about the functions and features of the music. I also learned how the director's intention, director's character and movement, the situation and events during the play, and the emotional changes of the character and the message that the work intended to convey were expressed and expressed musically. Through this, Randy Newman studied the musical characteristics and the correlation between music and images. As a result of this study, in this animation, music existed in almost every situation, and it was used as an important element as music reinforces the limit of emotional transfer that animation has. and It was settled in this film as a factor that maximizes the characteristics of the characters, the situation during the atmosphere and drama, and the emotional line and scene effects. In addition, the location of the signal music created to match the opening-independent video and in the ending credits, the main characters, "Monster" Sully and Mike, wrote the theme “If I Didn't Have You“ telling stories directly about the main theme of friendship, as a lyrics. Using the genre characteristics of Swing Jazz, the music has made the monsters and the world they live in a fun and sweet atmosphere. The characteristics of the characters were described using the voices and motifs of musical instrument groups given differently by each character and video and music were synchronized to maximize the effect of the scene. In <Monster,Inc.> Randy Newman's music was used in close contact with the film under the direction of the director and the characteristics of the characters, their situation in the film, the emotional lines of the characters, and the musical message that the animation wanted to convey were conveyed to the audience. That music plays a key role in animation, making the world of monsters and unreal monsters in the film more realistic. I hope this research will help not only the music of animation but also all the people who want to study Randy Newman and Pixar's successor in the future.
