영화 <쉬핑뉴스(The Shipping News)>의 음악 분석을 통한 크리스토퍼 영(Christopher Young)의 음악적 특징에 관한 연구

Abstract

본 논문은 영화 <쉬핑뉴스(The Shipping News, 2001)>에 나타난 작곡가 크리스토퍼 영(Christopher Young, 1957~)의 음악적 특징에 관한 연구이다. 크리스토퍼 영은 영화, TV프로그램 등 다양한 영상매체에서 활동하고 있는 할리우드 작곡가이며 그가 음악 감독으로 역임한 작품의 상당수가 스릴러와 호러 장르 영역에 포진해 있어 해당 분야의 독보적 존재감을 드러내고 있는 인물이다. 이러한 평판 속 그의 음악적 다양성을 보다 확장시킨 작품으로 회자되고 있는 드라마 영화 <쉬핑뉴스>는 소설가 애니 프루(Annie Proulx, 1935~)의 대표작인 장편 소설『시핑 뉴스 The Shipping News』를 영화화한 작품으로 설정된 지역 배경의 혹독한 기후와 주인공의 심리적 움직임을 섬세하게 다루고 있는 것이 특징이다. 본 연구는 이를 보조하고 있는 음악이 어떠한 요소로써 스토리에 부합하는 기능을 수행하고 있는지 알아 보는 것에 목적을 두고 있으며, 내러티브와 음악이 절충되는 지점을 파악하기 위하여 영화의 배경이 되는 캐나다 뉴펀들랜드의 역사적 특수성과 그에 기인한 토착 음악에 대해 우선적으로 조사하였다. 이어 크리스토퍼 영의 작품 세계를 통해 그의 음악사적 동향을 살펴 보았으며 본격적인 음악 분석에 앞서 영화의 줄거리를 발단, 전개, 위기, 절정, 결말의 구성으로 나누어 서사 구조를 보다 면밀히 들여다 보고자 하였다. 각 장면에 삽입된 음악은 형식과 구조를 선제적으로 분석하고 장면과의 연계점을 파악하여 그에 따른 특징을 도출하였으며 이러한 내용을 바탕으로 내린 결론은 다음과 같다. 크리스토퍼 영은 뉴펀들랜드 토착 음악의 근원지인 아일랜드 민속 음악의 특징을 대폭 차용하는 시도를 통해 음악이 지역을 설명하는 장치로서 기능하게 하였으며 민속 악기의 음색과 전통 춤 곡의 리듬을 통해 구현하고자 하였다. 또한 주인공 쿼일의 시점에 따라 전개되는 영화의 흐름을 관철하여 공허함, 따뜻함, 분노 등으로 변동하는 내면적 심리를 음색의 질감을 이용한 묘사로써 정교하게 나타냈으며 특수 주법과 기법들을 사용해 장면의 상황과 분위기를 더욱 구체화하였다. 결과적으로 음악은 주인공의 심리에 따라 흐름을 이어가는 서사 구조에 아일랜드 민속 음악의 색채가 가미된 형태로써 면밀하게 관여하고 있었음을 밝힐 수 있었다. 크리스토퍼 영은 <쉬핑뉴스>에서 감각적인 접근 방식으로 그만의 음악적 언어를 선보이며 영화 음악의 기능을 충실히 이행하였다. 본 논문이 앞으로 영화 음악을 분석하고자 하는 이들에게 조력이 될 수 있는 자료로 기여되길 바라며 나아가 크리스토퍼 영의 음악에 관련된 다양한 연구가 적극적으로 시도되기를 기대한다. ;This study aims to identify what characterizes the composer Christopher Young’s music for The Shipping News (2001). As a Hollywood-based composer, Young has provided original music for various types of visual media including film and TV show. With many of his scores being written for thriller and horror films, he has established himself as an unrivaled figure in the particular field. The Shipping News, a drama film recognized as where he expanded his musical boundaries, is a film adaptation of the famous Annie Proulx novel of the same name, which depicts with delicacy the harsh weather characteristic of its geographical setting and the main characters’ changing emotions. The purpose of this study is to point out the way Young’s music supports the film and connects with its story. To understand where the narrative and the music meets, the distinct history of Newfoundland, Canada—where the film was set—and the resulting indigenous music were first examined. Then, after exploring Young’s various works to identify his style, the film’s plot was broken down into exposition, development, crisis, climax, and resolution for a closer look into the narrative structure. In the following in-depth analysis of the music, each track was analyzed in terms of forms and structures and then of the connection with the scene. The findings are as follows: Christopher Young’s music portrays the film’s geographical background by largely adopting elements of Irish folk music, from which Newfoundland’s indigenous music originated, especially the distinct colors of the folk instruments and the rhythms of the traditional dance music. With insight into the flow of this story told from the main character Quoyle’s point of view, Young also elaborately portrays Quoyle’s emotions fluctuating from emptiness to warmth, to rage, to other feelings through different tones of music and gives further depth to the situations and moods of the scenes with special musical techniques. Taken together, these findings prove that Young’s music is closely linked to the narrative structure that consistently follows the main character’s emotions, with the influence of folk music. For The Shipping News, Christopher Young created music that fully fulfilled the role of film music by unfolding his unique musical language with a clever approach. It is expected that this study will contribute as a resource to those who wish to analyze film music and that further, multifaceted research on Christopher Young’s music will be carried out.
