규격화된 오브제를 활용한 실험 타이포그래피 연구

Abstract

산업화 시대의 출현은 기계에 의한 대량방식을 가능케 했고, 많은 기성품을 시장에 쏟아져 나오게 했다. 이로 인해 회화의 소재도 이전보다 훨씬 다양해졌는데, 일상에서 흔히 찾아볼 수 있는 기성품까지 예술의 영역으로 활용되기에 이르렀다. 이는 본래의 용도에서 나아가 사물이 가지고 있던 속성을 뛰어넘음으로써 그동안 예술작품은 유일하고 독창적이어야 한다는 기존의 선입견과는 전혀 다른 인식을 심어주었다. 이처럼 기성품을 적극 활용한 예술은 오브제 미술의 장르가 되어 다양한 형태로서 현대미술의 한 축을 담당하게 되었다. 이렇듯 기성품이 작품의 소재로 쓰이면서 일상의 차원을 한 단계 높이는 예술의 형태로 대중에게 친숙하게 다가갔으며 표현의 범주를 넓혔다. 이는 물감에 국한되었던 과거의 회화 방식으로부터 자유로워질 수 있었고, 화면에서 보이는 물건은 현실 세계를 그대로 반영하며 당대의 사회상을 여과 없이 보여주었다. 이처럼 오늘날까지도 현대미술에선 기성품을 예술의 오브제로 활용하고 있으며, 미술의 모든 분야에서 다양한 형태로 표현의 범위를 무한히 확장해 나가고 있다. 이와 같은 창작 방식은 사물이 가진 고유의 물성과 용도에 창작자만의 새로운 시각을 더함으로써 전혀 뜻밖의 작품을 탄생시킨다. 본 연구자는 이와 같은 오브제의 개념을 그래픽 디자인의 분야에 적용시켜서 오브제를 활용한 실험 타이포그래피를 제안하고자 한다. 이를 위해 본 연구자는 오브제의 이론적 배경을 통하여 현대미술에 나타난 다양한 형태의 오브제 기법을 살펴보았다. 그중에서 신문지, 벽지, 상표 등을 화면에 붙여 2차원적인 형태를 표현하는 파피에 콜레(papier collé)와 기성품을 중심으로 발견된 오브제(found object)의 파편을 모아 작품을 구성하는 아상블라주(assemblage)를 조합하여 글자 표현의 모티브를 얻었다. 이를 그래픽 디자인에 적용하여 실험 타이포그래피를 전개하였다. 이를 위해 단위가 명확하여 반듯한 형태의 글자 표현이 용이하도록 규격화된 오브제 세 가지를 선택하였다. 그리고 각각의 사물에서 글자로 발전시킬 조형 요소를 추출한 뒤, 이를 재조합하거나 모듈로 설정하여 영문 알파벳과 한글을 제작하였다. 이처럼 본 연구를 통하여 오브제를 실험 타이포그래피 분야에 적용하여 다양한 글자표현 방식을 모색해보았다. 기성품의 형태에서 파생된 글자는 기존의 정형화 된 글자보다 조형적인 모습을 띤다. 이는 본 연구가 실험 타이포그래피의 시각적 기호에서 한 걸음 더 나아가 조형적인 표현까지 탐구해보는 열린 개념을 반영했다는 것을 의미한다. 또한 일상의 사물에서 조형 요소를 찾고 나아가 글자로 발전시킨 점은 사물을 문자로 전환하는 것에 대한 가능성뿐만 아니라, 기성품의 오브제를 시각 이미지를 작품에 수용함으로써 박제화 되지 않고 일상에서 구현되는 문자 예술의 가능성을 제시하였다. 끝으로 본 연구가 실험 타이포그래피의 다양한 표현 방법을 모색하는데 도움이 되길 바라며, 아울러 앞으로 보다 개성 있고 창의적인 연구를 수행하게 될 때 본 논문이 다양한 아이디어를 창출하는 작은 실마리가 되기를 희망해 본다.;The advent of industrialization has enabled the mass production system to take place through machineries, and led to the innumerable ready-made products poured out in the markets. Materials for painting have also diversified from the advancement, with ready-made products commonly used in daily life becoming a part of the realm of art. Such a change has brought with it a whole new world of surpassing the attribute of an object beyond its original use which differs from the old preconception that an artistic work should be one-of-a-kind and ingenious. Likewise, art taking a full advantage of the ready-made products became one of the greatest cornerstones of Modern Art in various forms as a genre of object art. As ready-made products began to be used as the subject matter in art pieces, they became much familiar to the public as the form of art which upgrades the level of daily life, broadening the scope of expression therewith. This shows that the old way of painting which was merely limited to paints became boundless, and the products we see on our screens reflect the actual life without any distortion of the contemporary society. Even until today, contemporary art utilizes the ready-made as an object crucial to art, and infinitely expands the scope of expression in various shapes in all realms of fine art. Such a way of creation adds the original and intrinsic interpretation of the creator to the unique physical properties and use of the ready-made so as to generate an unexpected piece of art. I hereinafter propose an experimental typography utilizing the object by means of applying such concept of object into the field of graphic design. In this study, I have grasped object techniques of various forms present in contemporary art through theoretical background of objects. In particular, Papier collé that creates a two-dimensional form by attaching newspapers, wallpapers, labels, etc. on a flat mount and Assemblage which composes a work by collecting fragments of the found object discovered mainly from ready-made products were combined together to obtain the motif of the lettering. By applying the methods to graphic design has the experimental typography been developed. Additionally, after extracting the formative elements to develop from each object to each character, the Roman characters of English and Hangeul were created by recombining the elements or setting them as the module. In this respect, different character expression methods were explored by applying the object to the field of experimental typography. Characters originating from the forms of ready-made tend to have more formative features than the standardized characters, meaning that the present study took a step further from the visual signs of experimental typography to reflecting the open concept of investigating the formative expressions. Meanwhile, by searching the formative elements in daily products and developing them into characters, the present study proposes not only the capability of converting objects into characters but also the capability of textual art embodied in everyday life without taxidermizing but accommodating the visual image of the object in the ready-made. In sum, I look forward for this study to support in figuring out diverse methods of expression in experimental typography, and hope to provide a clue to creating various ideas when more original and creative researches be carried out in the future.
