Abstract
This is thesis for Robert Schumann(1810-1856) who is considered the most representative Romantic composer. Although his poetic and philosophical music are very romantic, he tried to write his music on the classical foundation, being faithful to the basic as well. Along with his literary activities, he delicately expressed his subjective emotions through his music. All three violin sonatas are composed in the late period and they show his enthusiasm and romantic sentiments. Sonata No.1 and No.2 are completed in 1851, and No.3 was written two years after in 1853. Among the three violin sonatas, the presents concise and concrete romantic features based on traditional form and structure. This piece consists of three movements. The first movement is in 6/8 time and is in the key of A minor. Moreover, it is sonata form while the second is written in 2/4 time, F major and rondo form. The last third movement is in 2/4 time, and its key and format are A minor sonata just as the first movement. Theme melody developed in all movements modifies the original theme and its parts in various ways and repeats it several times, using chromatic sequences within the middle- and low-registered melody to make the theme melody clear and emphasize it. Futhermore, the composer elaborately placed dynamics beginning with a weak beat, articulations, and contrasted melody lines to build delicate phrases and add emotional expressions. Based on the life of R. Schumann, this thesis aims to help with more effective performances by analyzing the forms and structures of each movement in and a way the theme melody presented, and by interpreting its general characteristics.
