Program Annotation

Abstract

This Program Annotation aims to guide the understanding of the works of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791), Michael Head (1900-1976), and Gabriel Fauré (1845-1924). The paper specifically studied the life of the composers and their musical characteristics. W. A. Mozart’s「Sonata for Piano and Violin in E minor, K. 304」was one of the violin sonatas that he composed in the summer of 1778 in Paris. Mozart’s violin sonatas are divided into three phases, depending on the role of the violin part. The K. 304 violin sonata was one of his second phase sonatas. This two-movement sonata is an only violin sonata that written in minor mode by Mozart. Both movements have the same E minor, however, their form is different in each movement. The first movement is in sonata-allegro form with a 2/2 beat. The second movement, marked Tempo di Minuetto is a 3/4 beat in rondo form. Unlike thet earlier period when the violin’s role is an accompaniment of the piano part, Mozart adds more weight toward the violin part by its advanced techniques. Michael Head was a 20th century composer who was born in England. Head is best known for writing songs, especially the work called 「Over the Rim of the Moon」, which is a song cycle that includes four songs: "The Ships of Arcady", "My Beloved", "A Blackbird Singing", and "Nocturne." These songs clearly represent the styles of the Romanticism and Impressionism. Head also freely uses various elements of the 20th century music by compromising them with traditinal chord progressions and melodies. Head expresses the mood and emotional changes of this song collection well by using various musical ideas. Gabriel Fauré is a French composer that represents the late Romantic period. Fauré's 「Sonata for Piano and Violin in A major, Op. 13, No. 1」is his very first chamber work that combines the styles of the Classical and late Romantic period. The title of this work, 'sonata' is obviously taken from the Classical period. However, the way of using other elements such as the diatonic and sequential chromatic scales, syncopated rhythm, and chordal progressions shows the style of the Romantic period where emphasizing emotional stages. It is also noticeable that he reveals some traits of the 20th century music. ;본 논문은 석사과정 졸업을 위한 본인의 연주 프로그램인 W. A. Mozart의 「Sonata for Piano and Violin in E Minor, K. 304」, M. Head의 「달의 가장자리」(Over the Rim of the Moon), 그리고 G. Fauré 「Sonata for Piano and Violin in A Major, Op. 13 No. 1」등 세 작품에 대하여 작곡가의 생애와 음악적 특징을 살펴보고 작품을 분석하여 곡에 대한 이해를 높이고자 한 것이다. 볼프강 아마데우스 모차르트(Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, 1756-1791)의 「Sonata for Piano and Violin in E Minor, K. 304」는 바이올린 파트의 역할과 비중에 따라 세 시기(초기, 중기, 후기)로 분류된 그의 작곡시기 중기에 해당되는 1778년에 여름 프랑스 파리에서 작곡된 바이올린 소나타이다. 이 소나타는 2개의 악장으로 구성되어 있고 모차르트의 바이올린 소나타중 유일한 단조 조성을 가진 곡이다. 제1악장과 제2악장이 모두 E Minor의 같은 조성을 가지며 제1악장은 전형적인 소나타 형식으로 2/2 박자로 되어있다. 제2악장은 론도형식으로 이루어져 있고 3/4 박자 Tempo di Minuetto의 지시어를 지닌다. 중기에 해당하는 이 바이올린 소나타는 바이올린이 피아노의 반주역할을 하던 초기 소나타에 비해 바이올린 파트의 테크닉과 역할의 비중이 확대되어 나타난다. 마이클 헤드(Michael Head, 1900-1976)는 영국에서 태어난 20세기의 작곡가이다. 헤드는 레드위지의 시인 「달의 가장자리」(Over the Rim of the Moon)를 가지고 4개의 연가곡을 작곡하였다. 4개의 연가곡의 제목은 각각「아카디의 배들」(The Ships of Arcady),「나의 사랑하는 이여」(My Beloved),「검정 지빠귀가 노래하네」(A Blackbird Singing),「야상곡」(Nocturne)이다. 이들은 헤드 작품의 특징인 낭만주의, 인상주의, 현대의 다양한 양식을 복합적으로 사용하여 단순하고 보수적인 선율 및 화성을 지닌 고전주의적 기법과 절충하여 여러 갈래의 다양한 양식을 담았다. 또한 헤드는 나타내고자 하는 감정들과 곡의 분위기를 악상기호를 사용하여 잘 표현하였다. 가브리엘 포레(Gabriel Fauré, 1845-1924)는 후기 낭만 시대 프랑스의 대표적 작곡가이다. 포레가 최초로 실내악을 위해 작곡한 작품이「Sonata for Piano and Violin in A Major, Op. 13 No. 1」이다. 이 소나타는 고전주의적인 양식과 후기 낭만주의 양식을 접목하였으며 근대음악으로의 움직임 또한 드러난다. 곡의 형식이나 성격 등에서는 고전주의 소나타에 가깝지만 선법과 온음음계, 반음계적 동형진행, 당김음의 리듬, 선법에 근거한 화성 사용으로 작품의 분위기나 선율 표현에서는 감정을 중시한 낭만주의 특징이 나타난다.
