현대인의 학습된 무기력에 관한 표현 연구

Abstract

현대 사회가 빠르게 발전하고 경제 또한 급격히 성장하게 되면서, 남들보다 더 윤택한 삶을 살기 위해서는 경쟁에서 뒤처지지 않아야 한다는 사고가 생겨났다. 그로 인해 현대인은 누구나 할 것 없이 오로지 앞만 보고 달리는 삶을 살게 되었으며, 이는 성과만을 강조하는 양상을 보이게 된다. 성과만이 강조되는 현대 사회에 사는 현대인들은 개개인의 삶에 집중하기보다는 사회에 의해 정해진 ‘성공’이라는 기준에 도달하고자 끊임없이 바쁘게 살아간다. 이처럼 사회의 기준에 자신을 맞추기 위해 살아가는 동안 현대인의 삶은 주체성을 상실하게 되고 그 자리는 무력감으로 채워지게 된다. 소위 말하는 성공한 삶을 살기 위해서 현대인은 어린 시절부터 학업에 매진하여 좋은 성적을 내기를 강요받게 되고, 그러기 위해서 정해진 시간표에 따라 수동적으로 살아가게 된다. 주위 어른들뿐만 아니라 학교에서도 미래에 행복한 삶을 살기 위해서는 높은 성적을 받고 일류 대학에 입학하는 것이 중요하다는 사고를 주입시킨다. 이렇게 현대인은 어린 시절부터 삶의 목표가 높은 성적과 일류 대학이 되며 이 조건을 갖추면 모든 것이 잘 해결될 것이라고 생각하게 된다. 하지만 막상 대학에 입학하고 나서도 달라지는 것은 없다. 또 다음 목표인 일류 직장에 취업하기 위해서는 높은 학점을 얻어야 하고 남들보다 더 많은 스펙을 쌓아야 하기에 고군분투한다. 이렇게 해서 일류 직장에 취업을 하게 되면 안정적인 수입이 생기고 행복한 미래만이 기다리고 있을 것이라고 생각하지만, 회사에서는 회사의 좋은 실적을 위해 좋은 성과를 거두기는 것을 끊임없이 요구한다. 이렇게 사회는 평생 현대인에게 사회의 기준에 맞추려 노력하기를 강요한다. 성과 내는 것만이 중요한 나머지 좋은 성과를 내기 위해 오직 주어진 일만을 해내며 살아온 현대인은 성인이 되어서도 자신의 의지로 삶을 살아가기보다는 타인에 의지하게 되며 본인의 삶에 대한 주체성을 잃어버리게 된다. 사회의 기준에만 맞추어 살아왔기에 수동적인 인간이 되어버린 것이다. 이는 비관적인 사고로 확대되어 자기 스스로에 대한 확신이 사라지도록 만들며 무기력한 현상으로 발전되게 만든다. 본 연구는 끊임없이 성과를 요구하는 사회에서, 남들보다 뒤처지지 않기 위해 사회의 기준에 맞추어 살아가다가 결국 심리적 강박과 억압에 의해 무기력해진 현대인에 관한 표현 연구이다. 이를 위해 7가지 작품에 Barrel-firing 기법을 사용하여 그을림을 가지고 거뭇거뭇 한 무기력한 현대인을 표현하였다. 작은 거뭇거뭇 한 현대인은 7가지 현대 사회의 상황에 설치되어 있다. 사회에 의해 무기력해지고 왜소화 된 현대인을 부각시키기 위해 인간의 크기를 축소하였다. 또한 보편적 인간을 나타내고자 성별과 나이와 같은 특성을 배제하였고, 하나의 객체로서의 무기력한 현대인을 표현한 것이다. 이는 작품 7개의 동일한 모습의 오브제로 사용되어 표현된다. 본 연구의 Ⅱ장에서는 현대인이 성과 중심 사회에서 살아가면서 심리적 강박과 억압을 느끼며 무기력해지는 현상을 알아본다. Ⅲ장에서는 연구자가 작업하게 된 배경에 대해 언급하고, 작품에 등장하는 무기력한 형상의 현대인에 대해 분석하였다. 연구자의 고개 숙인 현대인은 인간의 기본적 형상으로 ‘학습된 무기력한 현대인’을 나타낸다. 이와 형상이 비슷한, 기본 인간 형상을 만든 작가 ‘안토니 곰리’와 ‘배형경’ 작가의 작품에 관해 연구하였다. Ⅳ장에서는 Barrel-firing의 방식으로 그을음을 입혀 무기력한 현대인을 표현한 작품을 분석한다. 연구자는 학습된 무기력에 익숙해진 채 살아갈 수밖에 없는 현실에 대해 알아보며, 성과 중심의 사회에서 자신의 삶에 대한 주체성을 잃어버린 채 살아가는 현대인에게 과연 이것이 진정으로 우리가 원하는 삶인가에 대한 물음을 던진다. 또한 학습으로 무기력해진 현대인에게 자신의 삶에 대해 돌아볼 수 있는 계기를 마련하는 것에 의의를 두었다.;With the rapid development of modern society and the rapid growth of the economy, there has arisen the idea that in order to live a more prosperous life than others, we must not lag behind in competition. This has led to a life in which everyone in the modern world has to look ahead and run, emphasizing only performance. Modern people living in modern society, where only achievements are emphasized, are constantly busy trying to reach the standards of success set by society rather than focusing on individual lives. As such, while living to meet the standards of society, modern life loses its identity and its place is filled with helplessness. To live a so-called successful life, modern people are forced to concentrate on their studies from early childhood and perform well, and to do so passively according to a set timetable. In order to live a happy life in the future, not only the adults around them, but also schools infuse the idea that it is important to get high grades and enter top universities. As such, modern people come to think that their goal in life from childhood will be high grades and a top university, and that everything will be solved if they meet these conditions. However, nothing has changed since I entered college. It also struggles to get high grades and build more specs than others in order to get a job in a top-notch job, its next goal. This way, I think getting a top-notch job will create a stable income and only a happy future awaits, but the company constantly demands good results for the company's good performance. As such, society forces modern people to strive to meet its standards throughout their lifetime. A modern man who has lived by doing only what he was given to achieve good results, as an adult, depends on others rather than on his own will, and loses his identity. He has become a passive human being because he has lived up to the standards of society. This extends into pessimistic thinking, making sure that confidence in oneself is gone and developing into lethargy. In a society that is constantly demanding performance, this study is about a modern person who has lived up to the standards of society in order not to lag behind others, but was eventually rendered powerless by psychological obsession and oppression. To this end, the barrel-firing technique was used to express a helpless modern man with soot. A small present-day man is installed in seven modern social situations. The size of human beings has been reduced to highlight modern people who have become lethargic and small and insignificant by society. It also excludes characteristics such as gender and age to represent universal human beings, and expresses lethargic modernity as an object. It is used as an object of the same shape in seven works. Chapter II of the present study examines the phenomenon in which modern people become lethargic, feeling psychological obsession and oppression as they live in a performance-oriented society. Chapter III refers to the background that led researchers to work on and analyze modern people with lethargic features in their work. The researcher’s bow, the modern man, represents a "learned helpless modern man" in his basic human form. He studied the works of ‘Antony Gormley’ and ‘Bae Hyung Kyung’, the authors who created the same basic human shape. In Chapter IV, he analyzes works expressing helpless modern people by applying soot in the manner of barrel-firing. Researchers look into the reality of living with learned lethargy, and ask a modern person who lives without losing his identity in a performance-oriented society whether this is really the life we want. It also places significance on providing a chance for a modern man who has become lethargic to learn to look back on his life.
