Abstract
2015; Çankaya, Durak, & Yünkül, 2017; Kim & Lee, 2019). ;The 3R (reading, writing, and counting) skills were important in the industrialization era, but now, as software technology dominate daily life, new capabilities were required for learners. In particular, in the future society, as innovative technologies are expected to be implemented through software based on ICT(Koo, 2017), the ability to utilize software, including computational thinking, is gaining attention as a new learner competency. Computational thinking is a series of thinking processes that solve problems, design systems, and understand human behavior based on the concepts of computer science(Wing, 2006). Software education (here in after referred as SW education) is an education in which learners develop their ability to solve problems based on computational thinking (No ji-yee, Lee Jung-min, 2017), and aims to improve computational thinking through learning abstracts and automation process. The importance of SW education is also being highlighted as more and more people with SW capabilities are getting important(Ministry of Education, 2015). However, SW education requires prior knowledge of computer language due to the characteristic of SW education and requires higher-level thinking skills such as logical thinking. For this reason, novice learners often have difficulty in learning (Kim & Kang, 2010), also learners often give up the course or lose their interest when they required a high level of cognitive thinking skills(Kim, Seo, & Kim, 2016) during problem solving process. In this case, learners may have a negative perception of programming(Kim, Choi, & Kim, 2011), also can dropout the course. Therefore, to achieve the ultimate goal of SW education, which is improving computational thinking, it is necessary to enable learners to continue SW education. To this end, it may be helpful to ensure that learners have a high level of interest and a high sense of self-efficiency in SW education. Self-efficacy is known to influence the learners to continue their learning and to start further study(Schunk et al., 2008). Therefore, it is important for learners to have high level of self-efficacy and interest for successful SW education. Educational Robotics can be used as an effective tool to maintain learners' self-efficacy and interest in SW education. Robotics provide a hands-on experience for learners and allow them to participate in active learning processes that compose new knowledge while performing tasks(Anwar, Bascou, Menekse, & Kardgar, 2019). Educational Robotics also help to understand abstract information(Eguchi, 2014) and support collaborative learning(Burbaite, Stuikys, & Damasevicius, 2013). Previous studies have shown that the use of such robots in SW education has a significant impact on improvement of learners' interest and cognitive thinking skills(Durak, & Yünkül, 2017; Noh & Park, 2019; Yeon & Cho, 2014; Kim & Lee, 2019; Kim & Kang, 2010). On the other hand, as new capabilities are required for learners in the future society, new educational prescriptions are needed in the field. Calls arose for a shift in the paradigm of education following the release of a survey result that existing education methods were not suitable for the development of future learner(Yoon, 2014; OECD, 2016). In order to meet these demands, in 2016, Exam-Free Semester system was fully introduced. The Exam-Free Semester system refers to a system in which running student-centered class during one or two semesters of middle school courses and operating a curriculum centering on various experiential activities(Ministry of Education, 2019). Exam-Free Semester system is divided into curriculum activities and Exam-Free Semester activities. There are four activities for Exam-Free Semester activities: career exploration, subject selection, clubs, and art, music and physical education activities. Among these, the subject selection activity is an optional deepening curriculum focused on student demand(Ministry of Education, 2015). SW education is also recommended for these Exam-Free Semester activities (Ministry of Education, 2015). However, according to previous studies, there is a lack of contents and infrastructure related to SW education in Exam-Free Semester System (Kil, Lim, Song, & Yoon, 2017; Kim, 2018) so, it is difficult to judge the result of SW education in Exam-Free Semester. Therefore, in this study, we designed an effective robot-assisted SW education program for Exam-Free Semester and applied it to middle school students to verify the effect. The research questions in this study are as follows. Research Question 1. Does robot-assisted SW education program in Exam-Free Semester improve middle school students' computational thinking ability? Research Question 2. Does robot-assisted SW education program in Exam-Free Semester improve middle school students‘ self-efficacy? Research Question 3. Does robot-assisted SW education program in Exam-Free Semester improve middle school students‘ interests? In order to verify this, this study developed a robot-assisted SW education program for subject selection activities and applyed it directly to four middle schools' students. LEGO MINDSTORM EV3 and LEGO MINDSTORM software were used as robots to support learning during program. The macro design strategy for this program was the Creative Problem Solving (CPS) model (Parnes, 1967) and the ARCS model (Keller, 1987). The micro design strategy was 4C/ID model(Van Merriënboer, Clark, & De Croock, 2002). The developed program was a total of eight classes and inspected by one content expert and one educational technology expert. Also the program was confirmed after the pilot test. The participants of this study were 77 first-year middle school students in Seoul, and the preliminary survey showed that most students had no experience in computer education, SW education, or robotics education. The questionnaire on the program was conducted at the start and end of day of the program, and all data were collected and analyzed anonymously. For the analysis program, SPSS 23.0 program was used. In this study, to test the presented hypothesis, a t-test was performed and analyzed at the significance level of .05. As a result, it was revealed that there was the statistically significant effects in all variables: computational thinking, self-efficacy, and interest. In the case of computational thinking, all sub-variable (creativity, critical thinking, algorithm thinking, problem solving) except cooperative thinking increased significantly. Also the computational thinking improved only when students don't have programming education experience. As a result of examining by sub-variables, all areas except cooperative thinking were significantly improved when students don't have programming education experience. In the case of self-efficacy, the self-efficacy of the whole learners was significantly improved, but when analyzed by experience of programming education, it was significantly improved only in case that students' don't have programming education experience. In the case of interest, the interests of all learners were significantly improved regardless of experience. Based on these results, we discussed the followings. First, robot-assisted SW education program in Exam-Free Semester was found to have a positive effect on the improvement of computational thinking of middle school students. This can be interpreted as the use of the following strategies: First, in this study, visual language and educational robot were used as supportive learning tools and these tools were selected by considering the characteristics of learner and SW education. This helped learners to perform their debugging process by making it easier for them to check and modify their own programming. In addition, as a design strategy, the creative problem solving model (Parnes, 1967) was used to enable learners to find and review various problem solving methods when performing tasks. CPS model helps learners to solve problems by repeating diffuse and convergent thinking. This process of thinking contribute to the improvement of creativity, problem solving, critical thinking, and algorithmic thinking of learners. These findings suggests that it is important for learners to encounter real-world problems in programs to develop computational thinking. Also it is important to apply appropriate design strategies to helps learners to find appropriate solutions by repeating diffuse and convergent thinking. On the other hand, in the case of cooperative thinking, the score was increased but the difference was not statistically significant. Considering that the preliminary examination already showed a very high cooperative tendency of learners, it is presumed that the program did not have sufficient influence because of the short period of 8 hours. However, given that educational robotics can support collaborative learning (Burbaite, Stuikys, & Damasevicius, 2013; Igona & Jubilee, 2017; Liu, Lin, & Chang, 2010), It can also be expected to have a positive impact on improving cooperative thinking. Second, robot-assisted SW education program in Exam-Free Semester was found to be effective in improving self-efficacy for middle school students. Especially, self-efficacy of learners without programming education experience was significantly improved. This is because of using various strategies in consideration of the fact that the subject is a novice learner when designing a program. First of all, in this program, robot and icon-based software were used to minimize the difficulties that learners can experience, and cooperative learning opportunities were provided to accumulate achievement and surrogate experiences. In addition, the 4C / ID model (Van Merriënboer et al., 2002) was used to enable a variety of supportive learning tools such as an assistant teacher and an iPad during the class. This support in classroom seems to have contributed to the formation of learners' self-efficacy by providing them successful learning experiences and emotional arousal opportunities. However, the self-efficacy did not improve significantly for the learners with related educational experiences, suggesting that such treatments did not provide satisfactory achievement or emotional arousal opportunities for learners with programming education experiences. The results of this study suggest that it is necessary to provide various learning support for accumulating learner's achievement experience and emotional arousal during the learning process of robot-assisted SW education. Third, robot-assisted SW education in Exam-Free Semester System have always been effective in improving interests of middle school students regardless of their educational experience. These results indicate that it was effective to utilize robots with hands-on experience to induce the learners' situational interest. In addition, in terms of design, the use of the ARCS model (Keller, 1987) provides motivational lessons and provides a meaningful learning experience for learners to record their achievements. These findings directly suggest the effects of robot-assisted in SW education, and suggest that it is necessary to design educational programs in consideration of the characteristics of Exam-Free Semester activities for a long time. The results of this study are meaningful in that the robot-assisted SW education can contribute to the improvement of computational thinking, self-efficacy, and interest of middle school students in the context of the Exam-Free Semester System. First, when designing robot-assisted SW education, an appropriate learning model should be reflected to achieve the ultimate goal of cultivating computational thinking. SW education aims to cultivate computational thinking, not to train programmers. Therefore, it is important not only to learn computer language and grammar, but also to have a problem solving experience in the learning process. In order to have a meaningful problem solving experience, learners need to provide practical problems related to the learner's real life, taking into account that many beginner learners have difficulties while performing the problem solving process (Kim, & Kang, 2010). Also a variety of learning support strategies should be used. In addition, in the Exam-Free Semester System, teacher can use long time than usual class, but this may cause problems such as low concentration and interest. Therefore, considering these points, it is necessary to consider both the characteristics of the education and the application context in the design of the program and reflect it in the design for effective robot-assisted SW education. Second, it is important to select an appropriate educational robotic as a supportive learning tool in consideration of the characteristics of education when designing robot-assisted SW education. Robotics can be an interesting tool or an additional cognitive burden on learners (Yang, 2014; Lee, & Lee, 2008). This is because the design or assembly of the robot can be recognized as a new task for the learner. In addition, since the types and methods of activities possible in SW education may vary depending on the robot, it is important to select an appropriate tool in consideration of the fact that robots are a means for implementing programming results. Third, robot-assisted SW education for Exam-Free Semester needs to provide the level of the task in detail, considering that learners at various levels. Learners participate in the training voluntarily, so the level of knowledge could be different. In addition, it is necessary to organize various interactions during the task to enable collaborative learning. This study is meaningful in that it proves the effectiveness of robot-assisted SW education program in Exam-Free Semester System, but has the following limitations. First, since this study was conducted on voluntary applicants, the researcher could not control the characteristics of the study subjects such as gender. In the case of SW education, the results of education are often reported differently according to gender (Park, 2019; Bae, 2007; Lee et al., 2017). Second, this study was conducted on a single group only and pre-post tests were performed with the same test paper. Therefore, further research needs to use various control methods to minimize errors. Third, this study conducted only the 8 classes due to the limitation of the field condition, and used only self-report questionnaire. However, cognitive performance needs to be applied to the 16 classes program as long-term observation is required, and further implications can be derived if analyzing the research results by applying qualitative research methods such as observation. Based on these points, I would like to suggest the following research. First, in the follow-up studies, it is necessary to apply the program in a controlled environment and verify its effectiveness. In addition, it is necessary to extend the treatment period to examine the changes in cognitive variables such as computing thinking for a long time. Second, in the follow-up studies, it is necessary to further investigate the implications of the programs used in this study by using various qualitative research methods in addition to self-report questionnaires. Third, as the intention of implementing the free semester program is related to the career development and career choice of students, it is necessary to further verify how the program affects career choice in the long term.
