Program Annotation

Abstract

This thesis is a program annotation of the musical works that were performed at the author’s graduate recital for the Master of Music degree. The works are <A Cycle of Life> by Landaon Ronald (1873~1938), <Myrthen Op.25> No.1 “Widmung”, No.3 “Der nussbaum” by Robert Schumann (1810~1856), and <Sonata for Cello and Piano No.1 in e minor, Op.38> by Johannes Brahms (1833~1897). <A Cycle of Life> is a song cycle of Landon Ronald, a British composer in the 20th century. Ronald used Harold Simpson’s poem as lyrics. This works consist of five songs and each has a subtitle, Spring, Summer, Autumn, and Winter, except for the first piece, Prelude. In this song cycle, Ronald compares life to four seasons, and expresses life and love. Schumann is a representative composer of the Romantic era. <Myrthen, Op.25> is his song cycle that consists of 26 songs. It was composed using poems of several famous poets such as Rückert and Mosen. No.1 “Widmung” and No.3 “Der Nussbaum” represent love for Clara, Schumann’s wife. Schumann pays attention to the function of the piano accompaniment, and effectively makes use of the accompanying passages to express the lyrics. Johannes Brahms is a Romantic composer combining Classical elements. <Sonata for Cello and Piano No.1, in e minor, Op.38> consists of three movements. The first movement is written in a sonata form, the second movements in a complex three-part form, and third movement utilizing a fugal technique. Within the form of the classical sonatas, this sonata shows Brahms’s use of Romantic colors and harmonies. ;본 논문은 랜던 로날드 (Landon Ronald, 1873~1938)의 <A Cycle of Life>, 로베르트 슈만 (Robert Schumann, 1810~1856)의 <Myrthen Op.25> 중 Widmung, Der Nussbaum, 요하네스 브람스 (Johannes Brahms 1833~1897)의 <Sonata for Cello and Piano No.1 in e minor, Op.38>에 관한 작품해설이다. 랜던 로날드(Landon Ronald)는 20세기에 활동했던 영국의 작곡가이다. 그의 연가곡 <A Cycle of Life>는 해럴드 심슨(Harold Simpson)의 시의 내용을 가사로 사용하였다. 이 연가곡은 총 5곡으로 이루어져 있는데, 각 곡들은 제 1곡인 프렐류드를 제외하고, 봄, 여름, 가을, 겨울이라는 사계절의 부제를 가지고 있다. 로날드는 이 다섯 곡에서 인생을 사계절에 비유하며 삶과 사랑에 대하여 노래하고 있다. 로베르트 슈만(Robert Schumann)은 낭만시대를 대표하는 작곡가로서, 그의 연가곡 <Myrthen, Op.25>는 그의 부인이었던 클라라 슈만(Clara Schumann)에게 헌정되었다. 이 연가곡은 총 26곡으로 구성되어 있으며, 한 명의 시인이 아닌 여러 유명 시인들의 시를 사용하여 작곡되었다. 본 논문에서 다룬 제 1곡 “Widumung”과 제 3곡“Der Nussbaum”은 <Myrthen, Op.25> 중에서도 슈만의 부인이었던 클라라에 대한 사랑을 표현하는 곡이다. 슈만은 피아노 반주부의 기능을 중요시 여겼는데, 곡 전체에서 전주, 간주, 후주가 중요한 역할을 담당하였고, 반주부의 화성적인 변화를 통해 가사를 더욱 효과적으로 표현하였다. 요하네스 브람스(Johannes Brahms)는 낭만음악 시대 속의 고전주의자라고 불릴 만큼 고전주의의 형식을 중요시했던 19세기의 작곡가이다. <Sonata for Cello and Piano No.1, in e minor, Op.38>은 1862년에 쓰이기 시작하여 1865년에 완성되었다. 세 악장으로 구성되어 있으며, 전통적인 소나타 형식의 1악장, 복합 3부분 형식의 2악장, 푸가 기법을 활용한 복합 3부분 형식의 3악장으로 이루어져 있다. 이 곡은 고전주의 소나타의 형식을 기반으로, 낭만주의적인 색채와 화성을 보여주고 있다.
