Abstract
;This thesis intends to deepen the understanding of the music that J. Brahms has been praising as the great composer of Germany with Bach and Beethoven. J. Brahms is one of the representative composers of the Romantic era. He established his unique style called Neoclassicism by adding a romantic touch onto the classical style. J. Brahms composed 24 pieces of chamber music. , which is highlighted in this study, contains the most philosophical contents among the three sonatas that he composed. At the time he composed it, Brahms deeply thought about human destiny, putting the inner agony and willpower against the agony in his pieces. This piece composed of the total four movements represents the traditional sonata form. The piano part is well harmonized with violin, not just working as the accompaniment, but exchanging the melody back and forth fairly with the violin. Each movement has its own theme, so all four movements have organic relationships. The first movement is fast movement in sonata form. The syncopation rhythm between the violin and the piano in the first movement draws the melody beautifully. The second movement is slow movement in binary form and starts with violin G string only, creating a full and lyrical sound. The third movement is scherzo movement in three parts. The piano and the violin play, giving the theme melody back and forth. The fourth movement is rondo-sonata form, being the most splendid and dynamic among all movements. Brahms’ Violin sonata no. 3 represents his unique style, by using the syncopation rhythm, hemiola, and dotted frequently. Harmonically, Brahms used broken cords and diminished seventh. The purpose of this thesis is to understand his life, musical characteristics and sonatas, focusing on Brahms Violin Sonata No. 3, and to gain a deep understanding of his pursued music.
