Abstract

This paper aims to examine B. Britten’s 『Cabaret Songs』 and C. Franck’s 『Sonata for Piano and Violin in A Major』, which were performed in the author’s graduation recital. Benjamin Britten(1913-1976) was a representative English composer of the 20th century, who made a significant contribution to various genres, including vocal music, choral music, instrumental music, film music, religious music, and ballet music. Especially, his vocal music highly contributed to the development of English songs and Britten's songs have been highly recognized for their values so far. Britten’s 『Cabaret Songs』 is a song cycle, with its texts derived from the poetry of Wystan Hugh Auden. This song cycle consists of four songs; ‘Tell me the truth about love', 'Funeral blues', 'Johnny', and 'Calypso'. This work expresses love and a satire on society revealed in Auden’s poetry and he incorporated the Cabaret culture, which was in fashion at that time within in his own musical style. César Franck(1822-1890) is a Romantic composer from Belgium. His 『Sonata for Piano and Violin in A Major』 is the only violin sonata written during his entire life and shows his unique musical style. Franck dedicated this sonata to Eugène Ysaÿe(1858-1931), a Belgium violinist, as a present for his wedding. This sonata was premiered with Ysaÿe playing the violin and Ysaÿe’ wife, Lèontine Marie Bordes-Pène(1858-1924), the piano. This sonata is regarded as a masterpiece among the violin works in revealing the unity of the work through the cyclic technique in the four-movement Classical form and combining the Romantic melodies and harmonies skillfully. ;본 논문은 본인의 졸업 연주 프로그램으로 B. Franck의 『Sonata for Piano and Violin in A Major』에 대한 작품 해설이다. 20세기의 대표적인 영국 작곡가인 브리튼(Benjamin Britten, 1913-1976)은 성악곡, 합창곡, 기악곡, 영화음악, 종교음악, 발레음악 등 다양한 분야에 공헌한 작곡가이다. 그 중에서도 그의 성악곡은 영국 가곡의 발전에 큰 기여를 하였으며, 현재까지 가치가 높은 작품으로 평가받고 있다. 브리튼의『Cabaret Songs』은 위스턴 휴 오든(Wystan Hugh Auden)의 시에 붙여진 모음곡으로, ‘Tell me the truth about love', 'Funeral blues', 'Johnny', 'Calypso'의 네 곡으로 구성되어 있다. 이 작품은 오든의 시에 나타난 사랑과 사회 풍자에 대한 내용을 담고 있으며, 그 당시 유행하던 카바레 문화를 자기만의 음악양식으로 접목시켜 클래식 레퍼토리로 재탄생시킨 작품이다. 벨기에 출신의 낭만주의 작곡가인 프랑크(César Franck, 1822-1890)의『Sonata for Piano and Violin in A Major』는 그의 일생에 유일한 바이올린 소나타로서, 프랑크만의 독자적인 음악 양식이 잘 드러나는 작품이다. 프랑크는 벨기에 바이올리니스트인 이자이(Eugène Ysaÿe, 1858-1931)에게 이 곡을 결혼 선물로 헌정하였다. 이자이의 바이올린과 이자이의 아내 보르덴 펜(Lèontine Marie Bordes-Pène, 1858-1924)의 피아노로 초연된 이 곡은 4악장 구조의 고전주의적 형식 안에서 순환기법을 통해 작품의 통일성을 드러내고 있으며, 그 안에 낭만주의적인 선율과 화성을 잘 결합시켜 바이올린 작품 중 걸작으로 손꼽힌다.
