Robert Muczynski의 《Desperate Measures, Op. 48》에 관한 연구

Abstract

This thesis is a study on Robert Muczynski (1929-2010) and his 《Desperate Measures, Op. 48》 that brought the theme from Niccolo Paganini’s 《Caprice, Op.1, No.2》 for violin solo. Muczynski is an American composer associated with Neoclassicism. American music in the first half of the 20th century was influenced by European traditional music. Many European composers immigrated to the United States in the wake of two World Wars. As a result, diverse musical cultures were created in the United States. Muczynski was greatly influenced by this historical background. He preserves the traditional musical from but transforms the harmony and rhythm in ways that are distinctively 20th century. Especially the elements of jazz are important in his music. The rhythmic liveliness, irregular accents, the use of Blues scale are characteristic. Muczynski’s 《Desperate Measures》 is the last compositional work in his life. The traditional variation form is used in this work with an idiom of 20th century musical language. Each variation shows characteristic compositional techniques, such as diverse harmonic changes, irregular accents caused by a syncopation, various scales including modal, gypsy, and blues scales, various dance rhythms, and improvisational elements. He combined the style of Neoclassicism with jazz elements, so that he has become a composer of originality. This cause his works easily accessible to the public.;본 논문은 미국 작곡가인 로버트 무친스키(Robert Muczynski, 1929-2010)가 니콜로 파가니니(Niccolo Paganini, 1782-1840)의 바이올린 독주곡인 ≪Caprice Op. 1 No. 24(카프리스)≫의 주제를 사용하여 12개의 변주곡으로 작곡한 ≪Desperate Measures, Op. 48≫ (절대적 한계 : 피아노를 위한 파가니니 변주곡)에 대한 연구이다. 로버트 무친스키(Robert Muczynski, 1929-2010)는 전통적인 음악어법을 바탕으로 현대적인 작곡기법과 재즈적인 요소를 사용한 20세기 미국의 신고전주의 작곡가 이다. 미국의 음악은 20세기 초기에 유럽의 음악 양식으로부터 많은 영향을 받았다. 특히 두 차례의 세계대전을 계기로 많은 유럽 작곡가들은 미국으로 망명을 하고 이런 배경으로 미국의 음악은 크게 발전하였다. 유럽의 작곡가들과 함께 재즈를 미국의 대표적 음악 장르로 받아들여 재즈를 소재로 한 음악을 작곡 하였으며 세계대전을 겪으면서 새로운 민족적 스타일의 변화를 추구 하였다. 이로 인하여 대중적 요소를 혼합한 밴드음악, 학교음악, 노동자의 음악, 재즈음악, 대중을 위한 음악 등이 생겨났으며 라디오, 음반, 영화 등을 통하여 많은 사람들에게 친숙하게 접근하게 되었다. 무친스키의 생애 마지막으로 작곡한 파가니니 주제에 의한 ≪Desperate Measures, Op. 48≫는 전통적인 변주곡의 틀 안에서 독창적인 작곡기법을 구사한 작품이다. 각 변주곡 마다 화성의 변화나 리듬과 박자의 변화뿐 아니라 즉흥성, 재즈, 탱고 등 다양한 음악 요소를 사용하였다. 12음기법, 집시음계, 오스티나토, 불규칙적인 리듬 등의 음악적인 특징을 지닌다. 본 연구를 통하여 무친스키는 신고전주의 어법과 재즈적인 요소를 결합하여 자신만의 특별한 색채를 지닌 작곡가로 대중들에게 쉽고 새롭게 다가가고자 한 것을 알 수 있다.
