Kimchi Premium in South Korea's Cryptocurrency Market

Abstract

What has driven the asset prices in Korea’s cryptocurrency market to premium levels throughout 2017 and early 2018? The “Kimchi premium” phenomenon, in which cryptocurrencies on Korea’s cryptocurrency exchanges were traded at a premium to those traded on foreign exchanges, occurred. This paper seeks to unravel what has caused cryptocurrency to be set at a premium in Korea by examining the impact socioeconomic factors have on asset pricing. The rigid socioeconomic structure prompted people to invest in cryptocurrency, which was perceived to be a way to make quick money, as a means to escape the structural trap. Consequently, there was a high demand for cryptocurrency, escalating asset prices on Korean exchanges to premium levels. ;최근 국내 암호화폐 시장에 ‘김치 프리미엄’ 이란 현상이 일어났다. 2017년 초부터 2018년 초까지 한국의 암호화폐 거래소에서 거래되던 암호화폐 가격이 다른 나라들에 비해 월등히 높은 것으로 나타났다. 본 연구는 암호화폐 가격을 결정하는 원인을 밝히고자 사회경제적 구조를 분석한다. 본 연구는 사회경제적 구조에 의해 국내 시장의 암호화폐 가격이 결정되었다는 이론을 정립한다. 프리미엄이 붙었다고 주장한다. 구체적으로, 사람들이 사회경제적 구조에 대한 불만으로 인해 구조에서 탈피하고자 그 당시 암호화폐 투자를 통해 떼돈을 벌 수 있다는 소문을 믿고 암호화폐에 투자하여 수요가 크게 늘어 가격이 할증되었다고 주장한다.
